Zion is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2000 census. Zion is located on the east bank of the Chicago River and on the border of the Kane County communities of Arlington Heights and Hermitage Park. The community was laid out in 1871 by Hiram Mott and other settlers as part of a larger development called Elmwood Park. The name Zion comes from Mount Carmel, one of three hills in Palestine that were considered holy to Jews because they had been through wars with surrounding Arabs. (The others are Mount Gilboa and Mount Moriah.) In 1847, when Reverend James K. Polk visited Palestine on his way home from serving as president of the United States, he saw an indentured servant boy named David Levy walking down a road leading from Jerusalem to Bethlehem. Polk mentioned this sighting to fellow Americans during his presidential campaign speech in nearby Springfield on November 6, 1847: "I have seen more interesting things since I came into politics than I ever did before or will do again." In 1870, following construction of the viaduct over the Chicago River that would bring commuters into downtown Chicago from north-central Illinois once daily rail service arrived there in 1873–76 (the first railroad line reached Zion), Mayor James Hickey proposed naming eastern Cook County after General Jonathan Logan's brigade which had fought at Bunker Hill during the American Revolution. While some residents objected to any military connection associated with their town's namesake – especially since General Logan himself never set foot in Zionism – others supportively agreed based on their belief that Zion was where God's people should be located given its proximity to Jerusalem and its history as one of Israel’s most fortified cities against Arab attacks dating back centuries. In 1917–1918 during World War I Colonel John Stratton commandeered an Army Air Service bomber squadron stationed at Elmhurst Field near Rockford for bombing raids against German targets inside Zionist controlled Palestine; these raids continued even after America entered World War II due to strategic considerations about potential enemy troops concentrations near points such as Haifa harbor which could be taken by surprise by Allied forces operating deep within Enemy territory while under cover of darkness

Zion, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,592 at the 2010 census. Zion is located in the southern part of the county and it is bordered by Carbondale to the north and east, Peoria to the south, Bloomington to the southwest, and Normal to the west. Joshua Tree National Park is located within city limits. Zion began as a small settlement near what is now Carbondale on February 14th 1828 when five men from Adams County founded a log cabin called "Fountain Grove". The first town meeting was held on May 6th 1829 under the name of "Cedar Grove", after Cedar Creek which flowed through their territory. The first post office was established in 1832 at Cedar Grove with David Hadden as Postmaster. In 1836 John Hodge opened a store at Cedar Grove which became known as "The General Store". A school was also started there in 1836 but it closed due to lack of students. On January 1st 1840 Zion had its own incorporation as a village with six voting members and fifty-six residents. It reincorporated as a town on October 15th 1865 after annexing two other towns - Carbondale and Northbrook - that same year because they were experiencing financial problems caused by an influx of new settlers into their area during that period of rapid growth in southern Cook County. In 1880 Zion had 2 churches (Methodist and Presbyterian) plus one mission station serving 923 people from thirty-four parishes including Addison, Aurora, Bedford Heights (now Elmhurst), Bloomington Heights (now Arlington Heights), Brookline (now Danville), Crystal City (now Schaumburg), Deerfield (now West Dundee), Evanston (now Elgin), Florence (now Fox Valley Lakeshore), Glencoe Village (formerly Topanga Canyon Village) Hubbard Woods (), La Salle Village (), Lincoln Woods (), Lyons Township (), Newton Township () Ogden Township (), Plano Township ())and Rockford Township (). There were also three schools: Howard School for Boys () operated by Friends; First Baptist Church (); and Mount Carmel Academy (). Zion's first library opened in 1886 with twenty volumes loaned out for free. In 1863 an Agricultural Experiment Station was established at Zion along with two other stations Wabash River ()and Ione River (). These stations were used to test new methods for growing crops such as dairying and horticulture which would later be adopted by many small towns across America over time
Pope Pius IX moved the University of Paris to Zion in 1853. The university was renamed Catholic University of America in 1865 and the school became a national center for education after the American Civil War. In 1928, the university merged with Notre Dame to form Notre Dame Nazarene University. The merger created an educational powerhouse in Illinois that continues to thrive today.
