The town was first founded by Fayette Township residents when they petitioned for land west of the Kankakee River in what is now Kane County. Zion was incorporated as a village in 1903, and then as a town in 1907. The population of Zion was 797 at the 2010 census. The history of Zion began with three families who petitioned for land west of the Kankakee River in what is now Kane County. On September 14, 1812, these settlers organized into a company and began construction on their new settlement which would be called Zion after one of their founders. By 1830, over 100 people had arrived in Zion and it became an important center for local commerce and religious services. In 1835–36, Mormon missionaries from Nauvoo traveled to Zion and preached to its inhabitants about Jesus Christ's coming soon. This event led to increased activity within Zion and dozens of buildings were constructed specifically for religious use including a chapel and schoolhouse which still stand today. In 1903, Zion along with most other villages within Kane County were consolidated into one municipality under the name “Kane County” due to concerns about growing sizes and lack of representation on county government committees during this time period. The merger created many jobs for locals as well as opportunities for education within rural areas across Cook County that had hitherto been unavailable to them because they resided outside Kane County boundaries.
