Zion, Illinois is a small town located in the southern part of the state of Illinois. Zion was first settled by European Americans in 1847. The community was named after Judah P. Benjamin, one of the early settlers in what is now Zion National Park. The original plat for Zion was filed on December 17, 1847 and it was approved on January 10th, 1848. The town site included only about 400 acres and it took until late summer of 1850 for construction to begin on the original courthouse and schoolhouse. In September of that year, members of the Christian Church organized a church congregation which would later become known as the United Methodist Church. By 1860, there were over 100 residents living in Zion and it had received its own post office which served both the town and neighboring villages until 1865 when it became part of Rock Island County. The population size began to decline during World War I (1918-1945) as many farmers left their homes to fight in that war or returned home after hostilities ended. However, by 1950, Zionist had regained its prior level of activity with over 200 residents living in mostly single-family homes with several dozen businesses occupying storefronts throughout downtown Zion. During this time period also new churches were built including Grace Lutheran Church (1948), First Presbyterian Church (1955), Methodist EpiscopalChurch (1963), and African American Baptist Churches (1965). By 1970 Zionist had lost most its commerical vitality as a result of local opposition to planned suburban development within limits established around the community by then Agricultural Commissioner Clifford Kappes III.. Nevertheless, due largely to active participation by volunteer fire departments dating back to 1954 Zionism experienced an impressive resurgence during that decade with over 300 residents working out of severaldozen businesses some limited only to produce milk or eggs while others engaged in various industrial activities such as fabrication/fabrication services for automobiles etc.. Finally becoming fully self-contained again since 2000 Zionist has enjoyed steady growth averaging more than 5% annually thanks largely to efforts initiated by citizens themselves such as support groups formed around children’s literature programs held at local libraries or adult literacy classes offered at summer camps...
