Zion is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. Zion was founded by Presbyterian missionaries in 1839. The townsite was named for the biblical city of Jerusalem, which was then under occupation by the Ottoman Turks. The city's original population numbered only about 100 people, but it grew rapidly due to evangelical settlement and religious missionary activity. In 1851, Zion became the capital of Illinois; and in 1865, it became the seat of government for all of Illinois. The town's growth continued through the years until its incorporation into Chicago in 1931. Today, Zion is a small community with a population of less than 1,000 people. Zion's history begins with Presbyterian missionaries who arrived in 1839 to evangelize Native American settlers near what is now McLean County. Reverend James Caldwell led an early effort to establish a missions station here and baptized many native converts over the next few years. By 1840-41, Caldwell had built a modest chapel on ranchland adjoining present-day Zion Elementary School; this chapel would become one of the most important buildings in Zionist history. In 1851, when Emanuel Swedenborg organized the First Lutheran Church of Nauvoo (now Nauvoo), he appointed Caldwell as its first pastor and directed him to start proselytizing among local Indian tribesmen and other residents living near Nauvoo City Limits (now Des Moines). Swedenborg also appointed John Auld as president of what would come to be known as "The Evangelical Lutheran Synod" - an organization that aimed to promote evangelical Christianity throughout Northwestern Illinois beyond thoseOHare communities where such beliefs were considered heresy or apostasy against established orthodoxy.(1) Swedishberg believed that Apostolic succession could only take place through members who had been baptized by immersion into Jesus Christ - something that many Native Americans did not understand or practice.(2) Consequently, Svenberg's Synod began efforts to translate New Testament Bible translations into North Western dialects so that indigenous Christians could better understand their faith traditions.(3) This translation work eventually led to official recognition from ecclesiastical authorities within Northwestern Illinois as well as nationwide acclaim.(4) Not long after his appointment at Nauvoo City Limits (now Des Moines), Caldwell baptized Mormon apostle Lorenzo Snowcarth there on January 16th ,1846.(5) While some church members at Nauvoo City Limits experienced persecution from Mormons following this event - including many women and children - others fled northward towards Iowa Territory pursuant to Brigham Young's orders.(6) Xenophon Urges Greeks To Emigrate To America As They Weren't Welcome In Greece ZION'S FIRST BUSINESS WAS BAKING CAKES In 1861 Revd James Caldwell opened Zion Bakery which served goods up until 1903 In 1902 Mrs Hilda Goudreau started selling ice cream from her truck . The Zion, Illinois community was founded in 1847 by the Latter Day Saints. The community is located in the city of Zion, Ill., about 20 miles west of Springfield. The community grew out of a group of Latter Day Saint settlers who traveled to Illinois in search of land for their religion. The group arrived at Zion on October 10, 1847, and began to build a settlement there. The original town plat was filed on November 1, 1847. In 1850, the LDS Church built a church in Zion and named it Nauvoo after Joseph Smith's home state of Vermont. From Nauvoo onward, the townspeople continued to use the name Zion until it changed its name to Springfield in 1898.
