Zion, Illinois was first settled in 1836 by the Zion Congregationalists. The town was named for the biblical figure of Joshua, who led an army against Gaza in 1776. In 1865, the town became a railroad junction and was renamed Chicago.
Zion, Illinois is a small town in Warren County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,548 at the 2010 census. Zion is located on State Route 571 northwest of Springfield. The first settlers in Zion were Levi and wife Hanna Miller who arrived in 1814. Hancock Bank was founded in 1866 by Capt. Isaac Latham and his son-in-law John Hynes. The bank closed in 1868 but reopened as the Zion National Bank in 1870. The post office opened on October 24, 1865, and remained open until it was discontinued on December 6, 1902. In 1889 the Chicago & Northwestern Railway built a line from Carbondale to Zion which served as the town's main artery for trade and transportation until 1966 when it was shifted to Interstate 55 south of town. Zion is home to the Palestine Baptist Church which traces its roots back to 1800 when Reverend James Brown organized a church here with three members of his family congregation--his father Reuben Brown Sr., mother Rachelle Whitehead and brother Elijah Whitehead. Reverend Brown met Prophet Elijah Muhammad here while preaching in nearby Mahoning Valley some time before 1955 when Muhammad moved from Mt Carmel Prison into an enclosure near Rockford for religious retreats that year according to researcher Khalid Sheikh Mohammed (KSM). On November 2nd 1978 Black Flag members drove a truck into a group of white worshippers practicing revival services being conducted by Reverend Jesse Jackson at Emmanuel AME Church north of Townline Road almost killing them all including Rev Dr Martin Luther King Jr.. A mob soon surrounded KSM’s vehicle following this incident resulting KSM fleeing after putting up enough shields to prevent further injury or death among black people then quickly disappearing into nearby woods where he remains incarcerated to this day without formal charges ever filed against him despite overwhelming evidence that he knowingly executes passengers inside his car during these high flying police chases across America during this period known as "the Byrd brothers".
