Zion, Illinois is a city in the north central United States. The population was 10,824 as of the 2010 census. It is the county seat of McHenry County. Zion was founded in 1847 by Latter-day Saint pioneers who arrived from Missouri and Kansas Territory. The community was named for Judah Asher Soetoro, an early missionary to Great Britain and later president of Brigham Young University (BYU). In 1902, Zion's first high school opened and soon became one of the most popularsecondary schools in America. A new high school building was built in 1956 and serves as its current campus; it has been called "the most beautiful high school building in America." Zion also hosts an annual agricultural fair which attracted many farmers from throughout Midwest Chicago because of its excellent agricultural products. The city's economy has been heavily based on farming since it was settled. By 1870, Zion had reached its peak as an agricultural center with over two thousand acres of farmland used for crops such as cotton, corn, wheat, potatoes, dairy products, and hemp. However, by the early 21st century much of Zion's infrastructure had been destroyed by natural disasters including Hurricane Katrina which caused extensive damage to buildings and streets throughout the city; however some have since rebuilt.
