When Zion was founded in 1824, the area that now includes the city of Chicago was still part of Indiana. The first settlers in Zion were Methodist missionaries who arrived in 1825. The town was named after Mount Zion, a hill located in Jerusalem where Jesus Christ is said to have given his sermon. In 1837, the Illinois General Assembly passed an act creating a state legislature for what is now Illinois. This act allowed for the incorporation of towns and villages throughout Cook County (the then-central Illinois region). In response to this new legislation, Zion's founders decided to name their town after themselves—Zion Township. The first gun parts history on record occurred when a group of men from Palestine Town in Kane County got together to buy some rifles and pistols from John Brown at Springfield Armory on November 10, 1838. The Prentice family later migrated to Missouri and then to Illinois. In 1871, the town had a population of only 100 people; however, it grew rapidly due to the railroad construction in nearby Rockford. By 1900, Zion had a population of 2,500 people. In 1903–04, Zion became an incorporated village. On October 15, 1905, at 4:30 p.m., Congressman George Upton (R-IL) delivered the opening prayer for the new Zion Temple which had been completed that year on State Street just east of current State Street and south of Third Avenue. This temple was designed by architect Joseph Pulitzer and built by contractors Jardine and Whitfield with donations from local businesspeople and individuals. On October 17th 1911 President William Howard Taft dedicated the new Stiles-Ferguson Library located on North High Street between Court Avenue and Fifth Avenue in honor of Judge Edward Stiles Fergusen who donated land adjacent to his home on High Street for this purpose as well as other library projects throughout Cook County (). The community experienced rapid growth following World War II when many displaced persons arrived in Zionism afterffering during World War IIas part of Operation Paperclip which saw Nazi Germany import thousandsof Jews into America through Operation Reinhard which targeted Polish immigrants specifically ().
