In 1847, the Zion Baptist Church was organized in Zion, Illinois. The church flourished and had a population of between 100 and 150 people by 1850. In 1865, the church relocated to Manchester, Illinois and continued to thrive until it disbanded in 1895.

Zion was founded in 1847 by Mormons from Utah who arrived as refugees on the Illinois side of the Great Lakes. The original settlers were known as The Saints, after Saint Joseph, whom they believed to be their personal Savior. Zion was renamed for Emanuel Swedenborg, a Danish scientist and philosopher who had visited the area in 1786 and 1787. Swede family members erected the first log cabin in what is now Zion Park on November 3rd, 1847. In 1853 Zion was designated as the place where Brigham Young led his people from Nauvoo to Independence Grove on April 6th of that year. The church growth at Zion paralleled that of Mormonism itself; during its early years it grew rapidly due to conversions among both white farmers and black slaves brought over from Africa by Mormon missionaries. However, when polygamy became an issue with Congress outlawing it in 1890, conversions stopped and membership declined precipitously until World War II caused a resurgence which has continued to this day; today there are about 10,000 Latter-day Saints living in both Utah and Illinois. Although many aspects of life are similar to those experienced by Mormons living elsewhere around the world (such as temple attendance and religious education), there are some significant differences too: for example, alcohol sales are banned within town limits while LDS temples allow drinking not just before services but also during "time out" periods between services (known collectively as "sessions"). There is no military service or proselytizing involved outside of Church ceremonies; instead all citizens must either participate fully or support Church activities through taxes levied against non-Church businesses within town limits. Although approximately one-third of residents commute into downtown Chicago each day for work or school purposes,[1] nearly all goods available within town limits come from WithinSTOP's two dozen local stores - including four grocery stores - making shopping within localvirtually impossible without special permission from management or purchasing privileges reserved for members only!

Zion was a small town in eastern Illinois that served as the capital of the Republic of Zion from 1847 until its surrender to the Union Army in 1865. The town was founded by Latter-day Saints who arrived in Illinois in 1839, and it soon became one of the most important Mormon settlements in America. In 1862, Zion was chosen as the site for a new Mormon temple, and it remains one of the most popular tourist attractions in the area today. Zion's history is also illustrative of how difficult it is for small towns to maintain their own government despite being surrounded by larger communities. In 1860, when Zion was established as its own government, it faced challenges from neighboring towns that saw their territory annexed by Zion. For years, Zion struggled to keep up with the needs of its owncitizens, and eventually surrendered to Union forces without resistance. This illustrates how difficult it is for small towns to resist outside aggression and stay independent against powerful neighbors.
The first Zion, Illinois post office was established at the corner of State and Polk Streets in 1857. The postal service was discontinued in 1861, and the building that served as the post office until it was destroyed in 1887 is now a private residence.
Zion, Illinois is a small town in the Ozarks of central Missouri. It is located about 25 miles (40 km) east of Springfield, the state capital. As of the 2010 census, the population was 914. The Zion National Park is located in southwestern Zion County and includes most of what remains of the original 1787 Zionist settlement on land purchased by Jacobite refugees from Great Britain in 1827. In 1934, when President Franklin D. Roosevelt made Zionism an official policyof America, Zion became one of nine U.S. national parks under this policy.
