Zion is located on the border of Macomb and Wayne counties. It is bordered by McLean to the north and east, Sterling Heights to the southeast, and Isabella to the south. The town was founded in 1851 as a result of religious persecution in Ohio that had targeted Quakers. When General James K. Polk visited Zion in 1853 while on his way to campaign for president, he ordered General Winfield Scott's forces not to fire upon the unarmed demonstrators who were camped out near Fort Dearborn on Chicago's north side. This event helped spur Zionist activity in Illinois and was one of several occasions when American presidents intervened diplomatically in European religious conflicts. Zion was renamed "Ishmael" after an article appeared in The Jewish Chronicle (London) on January 1, 1875 which mentioned difficulties experienced by Poles living adjacent to Palestine because they could not get land deeds accepted there by local Arabs despite being able to produce evidence of their Polish ancestry; these Arabs also refused to allow Jews access roads or schools within their area since they felt that Zionism represented an attempt by Jews from Europe rather than bona fide Israelites looking for a homeland elsewhere
