Zion's roots go back to 1812 when British colonists arrived in what is now Illinois. The colony was named for Mount Zion—the biblical location from which Jesus Christ preached His sermons during his ministry on earth. In 1811, Mormon missionaries journeyed from Nauvoo, Illinois to find a new home for their religion in America. They selected Zion as their destination because it had ample water resources and had an open landmass that would make it easy to build churches. In 1831, when Zion was incorporated as a city by Congress, it quickly became one of the most vibrant civic communities in America due to its role as both a religious and cultural center. The city hosted numerous annual meetings of various denominations such as Methodism (a Methodist church), Baptists (a Baptist church), Catholics (an Irish Catholic church), Jews (a Hasidic sect with origins dating back to 17th century Poland), Lutherans (who were founding members of Germany's Protestant Reformation movement; later they transformed into Lutheranism throughout much of Europe), Presbyterians (of Scottish descent who practiced Presbyterianism within Scotland until 1800s; thereafter they spread northward into North America)), Mormons (from Utah Territory)—all of whom were united under one banner at this time: The Church of Jesus Christ Of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). The LDS Church first began proselytizing outside of Utah Territory in 1847 afterUtah Territorial Governor John C McLean announced plans to build an agricultural college at Lehi—just south of Salt Lake City—in order to educating future LDS leaders about American democracy and western civilization. As early Mormon missionaries traveled throughout Missouri and Kansas Territories promoting LDS religion through social media postings and lectures delivered outdoors on horseback or on foot—much like today's Jehovah's Witnesses—they encountered resistance from local residents who saw these activity as constituting pagan worship. However, with Joseph Smith's Translation Team's assistance(1845-48)and subsequent publication(1855)of scriptureBeginners' Guide To The Bible,[1]many locals cameto believe that Mormonism was God's true restoration attempt following the death of Adam & Eve experiencing multiple resurrections over centuries ago. Indeed many Americans viewed Mormonism favorably at this time because it represented traditional Christianity against modern secular liberalism[2]. By 1830 however tensions between Mormons & non-Mormons had reached such levels that Brigham Young called upon all citizens within his jurisdiction to unite against "Unlawful Associations" formed by outsiders[3]: This led directly to violence between Mormons & non-Mormons which continues up until present day including recent outbreaks near Des Moines IA where people are gathering together using BBQs while wearing masks

Zion was settled in 1836 by the Methodist Episcopal Church and named for Mount Zion, a mountaintop near Jerusalem which the church believed represented God's presence on earth. The town grew rapidly, and by 1853 it had a population of 5,000. In 1864, when Illinois became a state, Zion was designated as its capital. Over the years there have been several changes to the city's name; first it was called Chicago before becoming Zion in honor of the church's new capital. Today, Zion is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in Illinois and has a rich history that reflects its unique location within the United States and its relationship with religious organizations. The earliest settlers in Zion were farmers who came from southeastern England along with their families in search of new land to settle. By 1836 most of these English-speaking pioneers had arrived in what is now Illinois. They started out settling around present-day Uniontown on Hennepin County's east side, but quickly spread out into other counties and townships throughout the state. One reason for this rapid growth may have been that Methodists were among the first Protestant denominations to come to Illinois; they founded many churches here and were very active in promoting Christianity throughout America at this time. Because they were so active, Methodists soon became known as "the builders" of Illinois; they played an important role both during Reconstruction (1865–71) after slavery was abolished and during World War I (1914–18). In addition to beingbuilders of Illinois, Methodists also played an important role in creating Zion due to their belief that Mount Zion represented God's presence on earth. This idea can be seen especially through The Book of First Presidency Papers: A History (2007), which discusses how Methodist bishops traveled throughout America preaching about Mount Zion until they eventually arrived at Nauvoo Municipal Park near Chicago on December 15th, 1835. From here they began writing letters home saying things like " behold! Look! There he stands—Mount Zion—a sign from heaven that we are living upon his praise." This sermon ledto excitement within Mormonism because it demonstrated not only God's love for his people but also His displeasure with slavery; Brigham Young famously said although "all men must be free," Christians should not work under any circumstances because slaves would be bought or sold without taking into consideration what sort of person or race each individual belonged to (Young ed., p. 271). Due to this belief system Mormons began looking for new lands where they could establish themselves as a separate religion from mainstream Christianity while still sharing some core values such as freedom and equality with others around them (Hebard & Hebard 1997). After arriving at Nauvoo Municipal Park there began extensive construction activity around Mount Zion due largely to financial considerations since no one yet knew how much gold could be found off center Illiniwek Peninsula given its relative shallow water levels (-123 degrees Fahrenheit according To Potter 1978)). Work continued even after President Joseph Smith died en route back home acrosscountry on April 12th 1830s because Mormon leaders believed he had directed them thereto (! Zeehan 1880: 246)! After Smiths death numerous members of his quorum retired rather than continue working on templeConstruction which proceeded slowly due chiefly to lackof funding ($500K For 1yr vs $2B today) . However once adequate funds did become available work resumed feverishly culminatingon Nov 19 1840 when cornerstone finally laid henceforth commonly referred TO AS THE GREAT WOODEN CHALICE FOUNDATION CEREMONY

By 1870, the Mormon population in Nauvoo had shrunk to just 10 people, and the town quickly fell apart. A few years later, most of the Mormons left Nauvoo for safety reasons; however, a small group of them stayed behind and continued to live there until 1890 when they were forced out by American forces.
