Zion, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 9,974 at the 2010 census. The first ammunition store in Zion opened in 1851. Zion had its first rifle range opened in 1892. Ammunition production began at the Zion Arsenal on April 6, 1907 and ended in 1951. In that year, the arsenal closed because of budget cuts. Ammunition production resumed at the facility starting on January 1, 1957. The plant closed again on November 15th of that year due to low sales and financial difficulties. A new ammo plant was built in nearby Carbondale and operations began on December 12th 1977 with a capacity of 2 million rounds a month. That plant continued to produce Ammo until it closed down on May 3rd 1992 due to low demand from law enforcement agencies around Chicagoland area for round-nosed shot shells which were being used for black powder shotshells which were then being called "Targets".

Zion is home to several churches and other religious buildings including the Zion Unitarian Church and the First Presbyterian Church. The Zion community also includes a YMCA and a few businesses. Zion began as an agricultural settlement in 1847 by members of the Methodist church who were moving west from Keokuk, Iowa. In 1881, local farmers organized into a town corporation which name was changed to Zion in honor of Israel's first capital city on Mount Scopus in Lower Galilee. In 1927, after years of debate over whether or not to annex neighboring towns Hinsdale and North Aurora, Zion incorporated as a Village effective January 1st 1928 under the management of a board composed of five residents appointed by the Village President with staggered terms. By 1959 there were only three residents living in Zion (the remaining residents being employed elsewhere). The first settler in what is now Zion was Lewis Sutherlin who arrived with his family in 1847 from Ohio via Kansas City Missouri Territory along with other pioneers including James Witherspoon and John Whitehead. On December 17th of that year they erected their log cabin on present day Prospect Street near where K-State University stands today From this location they monitored Indian raids from their high ground acrossuck River junction about two miles upstream where Fort Dearborn now stands In 1850 Lewis Sutherlin's son Eli became one of seven men elected to serve on Charles Dickens' old "Daguerreotype" committee which developed early photographic processes for publishing . He died before he could take part but his father did share credit for developing panchromatic photography In 1865 when Abraham Lincoln was fatally shot by John Wilkes Booth during an election campaign visit to Mary Todd Lincoln at her Springfield home six men volunteered - among them George Mather - to drag him off stage so that he would not be captured alive until after his death sixty four days later some say because part ownership of Booth's body had been leased out by Quaker abolitionist paper publisher Elijah Hicks

The city declined after World War II but has since regained its former prominence as a bedroom community for the Chicago metropolitan area.
