Zion was founded in 1812, and is one of the oldest towns in Illinois. The name Zion comes from a Hebrew word meaning " Jerusalem." On November 3rd, 1812,[1] Abraham Lincoln signed an act creating Hamilton County out of what was then Liberty Township.[2] When Illinois become a state on January 15th following the dissolution of Michigan Territory on that date,[3] Lincoln's act provided for Adams Township to be included within Liberty Township as well.[4] The original zoning ordinance for Zion began to be written in 1829[5]: "He [the forester] shall have all privileges incident thereto...The land now belonging to Abraham Zook [a pioneer settler], . . . may be used for agricultural purposes only; but no other use whatever may be made thereof except for ecclesiastical purposes."[6] After initially being located near Galesburg (then part of Decatur),[7][8][9][10] Zion moved its operations to what is now downtown Chicago in 1836 because Galesburg's economy had collapsed due to railroad construction nearby. As city growth continued into the 19th century streetcar travel across town increased demand for open space close to business districts such as City Hall which would soon house many large factories like Armour & Co., Phelps Dodge & Co., Jno Laughlin & Sons Paper Cement Works etcetera while also accommodating high-end residential areas such as Wentworth Park (today’s Gold Coast) northwest corner Lot No 1 along Waveland Avenue between Dearborn Street and State Street where President James Kahl sold his farmstead some time after Polk’s win at Gettysburg
Zion was a community in McLean County, Illinois, United States. Zion had a post office from 1851 to 1897. The first settler in Zion was David Campbell, who arrived in 1848.
