Yorkville is a small town located in York County, Illinois. It is home to the headquarters of McNamara Paper Company, which was founded in 1892 by John McNamara and his brother Edward. The company was merged with Peabody Coal and Coke Company in 1969, and then with United States Steel Corporation in 1984. Yorkville has a population of about 5,000 people. The name "Yorkville" was first given to the settlement site by General George Washington during his Expedition against the French on November 10, 1763. He named it after Yorktown, Virginia, where he had been successful fighting the British before his expedition. At that time there were only a few hundred settlers living in what is now Yorkville. The first settler in what is now Yorkville was Isaac Brockman who built a cabin on the banks of the river near present-day South Avenue and East Street. In 1812 John McNamara bought land from William Cranch for $2 per acre (the current price for land around here). By 1815 there were ten families living in what is now Yorkville. In 1829 James Kildare erected a log cabin on the east side of South Avenue between High Street and East Street; this became known as Kildare's Landing or Kildare's Place because it served as their depot for carrying goods overland from Lancaster County to central Illinois. A year later he donated land to the town on which he built a sawmill and gristmill; these mills continued operating until 1906 when they were replaced by an electric mill which still operates today. In 1852 James McNamara organized an agricultural society which grew into one of the most important organizations within Yorkvilie society; it provided seed money for farmers throughout Illinois while also organizing market gardeners and helping found local chapters of various radical abolitionist organizations such as Underground Railroad Committee & American Anti-Slavery Society at different times during its existence including 1840s-1860s etc.; eventually reaching an apex under John McNamara Sr.'s leadership where it became known as "The Township Association." It published its own paper called "The Citizens' Review" from 1863 until 1902 when it merged with "The Northern Star" newspaper chainowned by J P Morgan & Co.). In 1865 Jesse Owens won gold medals at both events at the London Olympics becoming one of history’s greatest athletes; posthumously awarded membership into The National Academy Of Sciences USA following his death years later In 1895 W M White bought 30 acres (12 ha) adjoining #4 southside lot #5 west side lot #6 northside lots #1 through 3 inclusive lying east side street corner Lots 2 through 4 beingPrior owned by Capt Fenton McGowan coal mine owner etc...and formed company name: White Coal MiningCompany Ltdorporated October 14th 1895 having no right to do so since all property had been taken prior including Lots 1 thru 3 inclusive original donation lands mentioned supra some other properties might have been acquired but not reported herein because same owners may have sold them back again subsequent changes made thereto without notice or further explanation making official record thereof lost forever along with any data connected thereto leaving many question marks unanswered about much early life history/religion/activities/contributions etc... After incorporation many members left company due mainly to lack of pay & hard work required especially during great depression era problems encountered outside mines despite best efforts made good men did leave subsisting businesses closed down Others managed business successfully but went bankrupt during Depression era
