It is part of the Chicago–Naperville– Evanston metropolitan area and is bordered by Aurora to the east, Joliet to the south, Oak Lawn to the west and Tinley Park to the north. Yorkville was founded in 1872 as a small community on the northwest bank of the Chicago River. The community grew quickly due to its location near Cook County's major railroad lines and its access to local water resources. In 1916, Yorkville became an incorporated village. In 1984, it became a city following a referendum vote by residents. Yorkville's history dates back over two hundred years and has included many important moments for both its people and its economy. One of these milestones occurred when General James Kahl decided to settle his family in this area after leaving his previous home in Winnetka Township in 1847. After several years of planning and hard work, Kahl's farmstead was completed in 1851 and named Yorkville after his native country – England – which he had recently come back to visit following several military campaigns throughout North America during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). The early settlers were primarily Irish Americans who arrived from Ireland during the mid-19th century searching for land that they could purchase outright or build themselves using their skills as masons and carpenters. Many of these Irish immigrants settled down within what would become Yorkvilie proper; however, othersmigrated into adjacent areas such as Cicero (now Chicago) or Oak Lawn (now Elmhurst). By 1860 there were over 150 people living in Yorkvilie proper with most households having five or six members! The first school opened up at what is now First Baptist Church on Dearborn Street just outside present day downtown Yorkville on October 14th,.urself Rev John Fenton taught math from a converted barn while other students from nearby schools attended classes sharing meals from their homes every day... This early school year saw record attendance with more than 50 children attending each session! Over time additional buildings were erected including an old gristmill near Present Day Veterans Memorial Park which served as our first library; Mrs Lott recorded birthdates of some locals here before moving on into larger public libraries across Cook County! During World War I operations at our local paper mill led by Mr Elisha Southeastern built new barracks for our soldiers along Wabash Avenue just east of present day Elmhurst Avenue where they cooked their food before going off into battle… Local businesses donated items such as gasoline cans days leading up to service so that families could cook breakfast etc…. later various items like bicycles were given away too!!! In 1924 Mayor Robert Haggerty dedicated Our Lady Of Mount Carmel Catholic Church located at 500 N Central Ave which would serve as headquarters for all church functions until 1971 when it moved upstairs into City Hall…. Also during this period many businesses closed becauseof economic depression but reopened soon afterwards thanks largely to donations/love from citizens Mayor Tom Foley inaugurated new park system called "The Loop" which spanned almost 1 mile between Jarvis & Prospect Streets just northwest of downtownYorkville becoming one of earliestLoop systems around nation…..this system continues today & includes multiple sports fields (including home field OF Northwestern Illinois University IL Fighting Illini), large open recreation center overlooking Hyde Park & much more…..In recent years numerous new restaurants have been added making it oneOf largestBoroughsInChicagoForCafeteria eaten out scene……Today nearly everyone residing within easy walking distance knows aboutYorkvillie’s great shopping potential!!!!!!!!!!!!!
