The history of Yorkville can be traced back to 1836 when German immigrants settled in what is now McHenry County, Illinois. For many years, they cultivated land near present-day Yorkville while also selling goods and services to settlers living elsewhere in the county. In 1922, due to growing demand for agricultural goods and services from nearby towns like Frayser and West Elmhurst, the two villages merged into one entity known as Yorkville-Frayers Township. Today, much of what once constituted YORKVILLE remains unchanged; however, rising property values have led to increased development within the community over recent years. Shopping centers such as La Grange mall (which opened in 2002) and First American Bank (now Wells Fargo) are popular tourist destinations for locals and visitors alike; while downtownYorkville continues to serve as an important business district for local businesses. A new library complex called Gateway Park was completed in 2006; it offers access to more than 20K square feet of reading space as well as a number of resources available for free on its website or through library visits throughout the year
Yorkville was founded in 1847 by General John Brown and his brother James. The town was named for York, England. The first settler in Yorkville was John Woodruff. In 1853, the town had a population of sixty-six people and it began to grow rapidly. By 1861, the population had increased to one thousand people. Yorkville experienced significant growth during the American Civil War. In 1865, the Union Army burned down part of the town in order to destroy munitions storage facilities south of town. After the war, Yorkville continued to grow rapidly. By 1870, it had reached two thousand people and it became an important commercial center for southern Illinois. In 1877, Yorkville was incorporated as a city and its population reached six hundred fifty-four people. Over time, Yorkville became known for its beautiful architecture and its vibrant cultural life. Today, Yorkville remains a thriving community with a rich history that continues to contribute importantly to its residents today
