In 1970s and 1980s it became a center for computer technology research due to its location close to two major universities: Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis and Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT).

In 1832, General James Kapp moved his army from Cairo to Springfield where he became the first mayor of that city limits. General Kapp's family lived on Yorkville Road between what is now First Street and Second Street for many years until they moved to Mount Prospect in 1848 after their home was destroyed by fire
Yorkville was founded in 1847 by John York and his wife, Sarah. The town was named after the city of York, England. Yorkville grew rapidly, and in 1871 it had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1914, the city of Chicago annexed Yorkville, making it a part of the new city.
