Many businesses and homes were destroyed duringbombing raids on Carbondale on December 15th and 16th 1945. Today, there are a few stores located inside the old mill complex as well as some houses scattered throughout town which still serve as residences or businesses (e.g., The Mill). There are also several churches located within walking distance of various shops and restaurants; including one which has an indoor pool - Recreation Complex #1 (www2/ rehab-village/ yorkvillet-il). One such restaurant is called "The Boiler Room" because its popularity derived from cooking up hot water to make tea or coffee at home using two boilers connected by a pipeline - Community Coffee House #1 (www3/ communitycoffeehouse1 / yorkvillet-il). Finally, there are several parks within walking distance of either downtown Carbondale or downtown Yorkville which provide opportunities for day trips away from home for both locals and visitors alike!
