The move allowed for more development within the town while still keeping much of its historical charm and infrastructure intact including: two churches (the First Baptist Church and St Philip’s Catholic Church), several businesses such as banks and grocery stores (Eagle Hardware & Grocery Store became one of America's first department stores), an elementary school (now known as Northern Illinois University-DeKalb Campus), two parks (York Park on State Street and South Park Avenue), four churches (Derek-Lutheran Cathedral/Church Organization; First Baptist/Church Organization; United Methodist; Saint Anthony’s Roman Catholic) and numerous homes from various eras including those built by prominent citizens like George Washington Carver or Alexander Graham Bell. Today, many people who call Yorkville home are descendants of early settlers like John York or James York who were responsible for making this community what it is today. The village has experienced some growth since its founding—in 1960, it had only 1 house out of 100 residents; by 2002, that number had increased to more than 20%. However, during much of this period there wasn't much else for people to do except work or live near their homes. That all changed starting around 2000 when the Illinois Tollway was built through the town: now there are several stores and restaurants within walking distance of most households, as well as several movie theaters and other retail outlets nearby if needed. Today's economy is based largely on services such as shipping, manufacturing (including plastics manufacture), health care – including dentistry –and tourism not just from visitors coming to see the attractions close by but also from families who want to stay near friends or family while they take care of business back home.
