Yorkville is a small town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Yorkville is named after Yorktown, Virginia, where General George Washington was born in 1758 and his father died in 1759. The first settler in what is now Yorkville was David Witherspoon, who arrived there on May 6, 1827. He and his family were the only occupants of the three-acre (1 hectare) site that he purchased from John Whitehead for $200USD. In 1836, Jno. Ladd sold 1 acre (0.50 hectare) to Nathan Bedford Forrest for $100USD which became known as Forrest's Farmstead because it served as one of four farms used by Forrest to grow corn for his cattle and horse herds during the Prairie Wars (1861–1865). The first post office in Yorkville was established on November 5, 1837; it operated under the name Elmira until 1840 when it changed its name to Yorkville because of its location near Yorktown Heights on Cook Road. The first store in town was built by William Scranton on December 15, 1840; it traded goods with Fort Dearborn and other frontier posts across the state of Illinois. By 1865, when the original town line crossed Cook Road just south of present day Elmira Avenue NE., most residents had moved away or been pushed out by development along that road between Aurora and Wheaton Avenues NE.. In 1870 Samuel Morse opened a flour mill at present day Elmira Avenue NE.. From 1890 until 1945 there were two banks located downtown: First National Bank and Trust Company which merged into American Bankers Association in 1945; and Peoples Savings Bank which closed down around 1990s due to heavy competition from bank branches within a few miles of downtown KCMO.. By 1920s most businesses had closed or moved away from downtown due to changing economic conditions including heavy industry moving from northcentral IL towards Garysburg IN., automobile production shifting towards suburban areas throughout IL., Milwaukee WI becoming increasingly important as a regional trade center with new distribution networks developing out west via caravan routes.; however some older businesses such as hardware stores continued up through prohibition era before closing again during prohibition era [1921-1933]. The last business open before prohibition ended was Sam Weller's Drug Store which reopened after prohibition ended but failed due to lack of customer demand[ 1934-1945 ]. Yorkville experienced rapid growth following World War II with many young people coming back home from abroad brought over by GI Bill programs; however once postwar boom slowed down numerous young people left without jobs opportunities returned home while others remained "invisible" - working odd jobs or selling property off piecemeal largely relying upon family support system rather than formal employment opportunities outside their community/ hometown communities.......In 1955 local citizens formed their own government unincorporated village chartering themselves as 'Yorkvillie'.........Since then many changes have taken place including annexations by neighboring townships (Elmira Heights being annexed in 1984), annexation by nearby villages (2002), fire suppression efforts resulting in loss of almost all homes within city limits since 2004.......A total of 20 buildings have been demolished due to fires since 2004...........The current population estimate stands at 2,611
