Yorkville is a small, rural town in Putnam County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,003 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The village was founded in 1868 by Loyalist refugees from Yorktown Heights, New York City. The name comes from York Fields (now called Prospect Park). The first plat for the village was filed in 1869 and the village was incorporated on November 15, 1871. The original town site included only a few acres of land located near where later Yorkville High School andYorkville Middle School would be built. In 1881 Harry Sills donated 630 acres (248 hectares) of land to the town for development purposes as a Farmers' Market and Agricultural Center. This center became known as "Yorkville". A post office was established at Yorkville in 1872; it remained in operation until 1959. In 1916 the first telephone line arrived in Yorkville; it would become an integral part of local life and remain operational until 2006 when it was replaced by fiber optic cable. In 1938 the then-new Wabash Railroad Station was built just east of which current day North Avenue and West Street meet; this station served as both a stop for trains coming into town from outlying areas such as Carbondale, Mokena and Warsaw Junction on their way to Rockford or other points northward (the now demolished former depot also served as the primary store building for many years). The following year demolition began on what had been Wabash's original Depot Site to make way for new construction including a high school which opened its doors on October 4th 1940 with grades 7-12 being housed there before moving to their present location across First Avenue west of Interstate 90 in 2002

During World War II, some of the largest employers in Yorkville were Armour Electric Corporation (now Arca Electric) and Mack Trucks Incorporated (now Mack truck manufacturer). Other major employers during this period include Boeing Company (now Lockheed Martin), US Steel Corporation (now UAL Aircraft), Beloit University Hospitality School District No 2 (now Beloit College),and HanesBrands Incorporated ().

Yorkville is located in the southwest portion of the city of Chicago, within the boundaries of the Yorkville Community School District. It was founded in 1892 by Irish immigrants who had moved to Chicago from County Clare. The first settler in Yorkville was John Boyle, who purchased land east of State Street and north of Wabash Avenue. In 1896, a group of local businessmen organized the Yorkville Improvement Society to improve and add value to what were then rural areas in Illinois. The society later became known as the "Yorkville Club." The area around Yorkville grew rapidly during World War I due to its proximity to military bases and jobs at Ford Motor Company. In 1922, Mayor George Dixon created the position of City Manager for Chicago and appointed John Byrne as his first deputy. In 1927, Byrne left office and was succeeded by Clarence Hodges. Hodges left office after only two years due to health problems which he had been struggling with for some time. He was replaced by Edward Jorgenson who served until 1935 when he retired due to ill health. On July 1, that year, Cleveland Stroud became the new City Manager after winning an election against incumbent Harry Woods Jr.. Jorgenson's tenure saw many changes within the city including a rise in crime rates which began to decrease under his leadership; however, this progressivism also came at a cost as social services were cutback during his time as manager. In 1938-39, Jorgenson made a major move when he decided that all businesses within the city should be required to have their own insurance policies or face closure; this led to increased business activity throughout Yorkville which avoided cutsbacks seen elsewhere in town. During World War II, many factories closed down due to lack of demand but while somebusinesses did close they reopened shortly afterwards because they had obtained insurance through their original owners/managers (most notably Job Corp.). Jorgenson resigned from his post on November 9th 1945 after serving for 35 years with distinction within the department - one short year before his death at age 86 years old on December 12th 1946 following a long illness that had begun three months earlier
