The original town center was located on the north side of Elm Street between Wacker Drive and First Avenue. In 1876, Yorkville became an incorporated village with a population of 283. In 1907, Yorkville became a city following the merger of its villages and townships into one municipality. That year, it had a population of 763; by 2000, that number had grown to 1,823. The primary economic sectors in Yorkville are agriculture (primarily corn), manufacturing (including two large aluminum companies), and service businesses such as accounting and law firms. The Wright brothers flew in their first airplane from here to Chicago in 1903; they built their first powered aircraft here in 1922 The City Council is made up of six councillors who are elected at-large for staggered terms beginning with one year after election; three councillors serve continuously until die or run for office again; and three others are elected every four years to serve one-year terms ending December 31st regardless of whether they have served any length of time since their predecessor's term expired. There is also an acting mayor who serves during council meetings when either the mayor or one of the councillors cannot be present due to illness or travel/furlough reasons

The village was founded in 1831 by John Cook and others as a stop on the Great Northern Road between Peoria and Rockford. Yorkville became an incorporated town in 1892. In 1915, it merged with neighboring Spirit Lake to form what is now known as Yorkville-Spirit Lake Township. The township was abolished in 1968 and its former land became part of the new city of Peoria. In 1924, Yorkville built the first all-electric powered streetlights in the United States. The Village also has one of only two functioning "steam engines" still in operation in Illinois; it is used for ceremonial purposes at events such as Fourth of July parades and other community festivals. The village also has an annual Pumpkin Festival that features more than seventy different types of pumpkins from around the world including unusual hybrids like gourds and snowmen made from sugarcane pulp sacks filled with candy canes or Halloween decorations wrapped around spooky cream puffs (a type of treat known as a 'pumpkin pie').
