Hanks’ store continued to be successful for many years until it closed its doors in 1977. Yorkville, Illinois was a small town in the far northwest corner of Chicago when the first firearms were introduced into this region. The first guns were pistols and rifles that were used to hunt game. In 1871, a man by the name of John Butler started a gun store in Yorkville with his brother-in-law, James McNally. In 1872, Butler also started a blacksmith shop in Yorkville. In 1892, the city of Chicago closed down all the frontier businesses in the area and moved out of town. This left Yorkville with just two merchants - John Butler and James McNally - and no gun industry to support. However, both men continued to operate their businesses until at least 1914. John Butlers death in 1912 left his business alone but it continued to be run until 1954 by his son-in-law, Aloysius J. "Jaddy" Butler Sr.. James McNally's death in 1915 also left Yorkville without any Gun smiths but he continued to run his business until at least 1914 when it was taken over by Aloysius Jaddy Butlers Sr.. Aloysius Jaddy Butlers Jr.'s father had been born in Ireland and emigrated to America at age 16. He worked his way up throughthe ranks of American Businessesman before becoming owner and manager of Jaddy's Guns & Ammo on State Street in downtown Chicago from 1926 until 1945 when he sold it to Harry Wertheimer who operated it under the name Harry Wertheimer & Sons from 1945 until its closure in 1951.

Additionally, there are now several professional sports teams based in Yorkville - most notably the Bulls/Cubs baseball team who played their first game at Yankee Stadium in 1922 - as well as a number of theaters offering various shows each nightfall.
