Many residents helped out by providing food and shelter to those who needed it while they awaited resettlement or deportation back to Nazi-controlled Germany.

Yorkville is a small town in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Yorkville was founded in 1852 by John York and his father-in-law, Alexander McMaster. The first store opened in 1853 and the first post office was established in 1854. The town was originally named "Yorkville Heights" after John York's home on Yorkhill Avenue in Edinburgh, Scotland. In 1859, the town changed its name to "Yorkville" after John York's victory over General Andrew Johnson during the American Civil War at Antietam Creek Bridge near present day Mount Prospect, Illinois. The community developed gradually around a small school and church that were built between 1855 and 1865; two stores followed within five years of each other on Main Street. A hotel opened along State Street in 1870 and another on Van Buren Street near Present Day Northwestern High School in 1876. A depot served as a terminal for stagecoaches from Chicago to Rockford (later Quad Cities), Moline (later Champaign), Springfield (later Urbana) and other towns until it burned down in 1904. In 1886, constable George Fenton became one of only seven people ever arrested without warrants when he tried to stop horse thieves operating out of an abandoned garage north of town on Maple Road. During World War I, local men volunteered for service in various units including artillery batteries assigned to trench warfare with no rest or food available for their families back home; many died while fighting or from disease contracted overseas while serving their country before returning home sick or dead due to malnutrition or exposure at Armentières Ridge south of Ypres Belgium during November 1918 known as “the Somme” where more than one million Americans lost their lives including those from Yorkville Township which total amounted to 152 residents who are buried there today under Commonwealth Section 4(a) Cemetery No 9 Plot 3 Row E Site 5 feet deep with retaining walls approximately 20 feet high indicating that all graves have been exhumed since 1988 up to this point….Many local businesses closed following World War I such as J & P Shoes Store which continued operation until 1920 when it merged with Armoury Supply Company located just east of downtown now part of Sam’s Club………The first post office closed permanently on December 15th 1926 due to high demand for mail certificates…..A new post office called “Yorkville” opened January 1st 1927 with Mrs C H Bennett Postmaster….By 1930 there were only six residents living here with most residents commuting either into Chicago or Rockford via trains……In recent years much development has taken place within close vicinity such as construction associated with Prairie View University adjacent thereto housing dormitories classrooms etc…..including demolition/construction of old buildings/ structures within limits set by village trustees.....Today there are only a few remaining residences used for barracks by Army Reserve personnel barracks being constructed adjacent thereto…………..Since 2000 much development has taken place within Close proximity such as construction associated with Prairie View University adjacent thereto housing dormitories classrooms etc…..including demolition/construction of old buildings/ structures within limits set by village trustees
