Yorkville is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,951 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. Yorkville is located on the east bank of the Ottawa River and about two miles from downtown Springfield. The first settler in what would become Yorkville was a man named John Nolen who arrived in 1836. He built a log cabin on the east side of the river where he still lives today. In 1840, another man named James Fenton bought land on which to build his home and sawmill; this became known as "Fenton's Mill". In 1845, Benjamin Hogue moved to Yorkville from Galesburg and started growing maize and wheat at his home farmstead on what is now Main Street. After Hogue died in 1848, his wife Mary took over running the farmstead until her death in 1861. She was followed by their son Benjamine who ran it for many years until it passed intoetta ownership with Benjamine's daughter Jennie taking it over in 1930. In 1896, Elisha Peck opened an ice cream parlor called The Three Feathers that later became popularly know as "Peck's." The townspeople financed Peck's costs while he operated out of his house (now an old grist mill). In 1907, local entrepreneur Harry Smith founded The Standard grocery store which soon replaced Peck's as the town’s most important business institution. Since its incorporation as a village in 1906, Yorkville has experienced significant growth including: expanding housing developments such as First National City Center; construction of new schools including Harper Elementary School and Yorkville Middle School; numerous cultural events such as performances by symphony orchestras and dance recitals; expansions to businesses such as Wells Fargo Bank and Sears Roebuck & Co.; development of new parks such as North Park reservoir area; addition of a water tower ;and much more!
