In 1925, Yorkville annexed the neighboring village of Northampton. This annexation caused some tension because Northampton's citizens wanted to keep their own government and water supply whileYorkville received federal funding to build a public school and provide other services such as water main replacement and street repairs.
In 1955, the Eisenhower administration announced plans to construct Interstate 64 through McLean County; however, no action was taken until 1957 when then-McLean County Administrator William Hickey recommended that Yorkville annex its southern neighbor Lebanon Valley so that I-64 would not cross into their land at what is now Lebanon Township on circuit court property east of Route 12th Street. After much discussion between both villages about possible annexation agreements (which never happened), residents voted in favor of this proposal by a wide margin on November 3rd 1959.
On March 8th 1960, I-64 was officially dedicated along with new streets and routes within Yorkville as part of an expansion project which also included eliminating two block miles (3 kilometers) of Ulysses S Grant Boulevard from downtown Springfield to make way for I-64.
The original road designation still exists today on portions of Ulysses S Grant Boulevard: it is called "John Fenton Drive".
Since its incorporation as a Village in 1925, Northampton has lost more than half its population due to migration from rural areas towards larger towns in central Illinois or outside McLean County during the 1930s Depression era.
However, since 2000 there has been increasing commercial development activity within Northampton proper thanks to various state grants awarded pursuant to efforts spearheaded by Mayor Bob Kappelhoff
By 2010 there were over 100 businesses operating in Northampton with an estimated payroll greater than $40 million annually

By 1959, however, most of JCPenney's plants had closed or been sold off to other companies; Yorkville became an agricultural center with manufacturing emphasis until 1990 when heavy industry declined andemplaned by light industries such as textiles and plastics; later still there has been some resurgence of heavy industry with new production facilities being built in recent years near Interstate 43 east of town which benefits from easy access to passenger traffic on I-43
