Yorkville, Illinois is the largest city in York County, Illinois and the county seat. The population was 46,951 at the 2010 census. The first gunsmith in Yorkville was Daniel Boone. In 1834, George Stephenson founded the Stephenson Machine Works here. It produced locomotives for Union Pacific Railroad. In 1867, Julius Czolgosz brought his cannons from Warsaw to this area to arm American forces during the American Civil War. Ammunition manufacturing began in Yorkville in 1868 when John A. Winchester built a machine shop here to make rifle rounds and shells for artillery on account of their high explosive content which caused no danger to people or property nearby. The town grew rapidly after Winchester's success and by 1899 it had a population of over 100,000 people with munitions factories, smelters and other businesses scattered throughout its neighborhoods like Armoury Place (now part of downtown), West Side Avenue (now Memorial Drive), Spring Street (now Saginaw Boulevard), North Side Avenue (now Chicago Boulevard) and EastSide Avenue (now North Park Boulevard). By 1916 ammunition production had increased to such an extent that Winchester was forced to move production to Momence in neighboring Clinton County because of shortages within Yorkville itself of both manufactured ammo and raw materials necessary for making it

Notable recent developments include:[a large homebuilder[] constructing luxury condos near State Street];[an indoor soccer team playing its home games at Soldier Field];[a brewery called Blue Moon opened in 2016 adjacent to Navy Pier];[an entertainment complex known as The Ritz opened near Millennium Park]—all combining for over 100 jobs.[bringing total employment within DowntownYorkvillian boundaries since 2011 up more than 50%].
