The couple had married at age 24 and soon started producing crops and raising livestock near what is now known as the intersection of I-290 and Ulysses Road (now State Route 4). In 1853, General Polk recruited some Ofabasgee Indians to help him build a road between Chicago and St Louis so that goods could be shipped westward across the Mississippi River seasonally unimpeded by pirates or Native American raiders. This road would later become known as the Indiana Canal system and play an important role in economic development throughout central Illinois during the 19th century. After Julia Child’s death in 1904, James K Polk Sr., one of her children also died young at age 46 due to pneumonia contracted while serving as President George Washington’s ambassador to Russia (1897-1901). At Julia Child’s deathbed she bequeathed $10 million ($240 million today) to education charities around the world which would eventually outlive her own family members by more than 70 years! Her legacy continues on through Yorkville Community Schools which offer students rigorous academic programs that prepares them for college degrees or other professional opportunities after graduation
