Worth, Illinois is a village in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. Worth is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settler in what would become Worth was Hiram Green in 1814. Green and his family were subsistence farmers and had one cabin until they founded an even more remote post office on October 20, 1821 with the name "Pleasant Hill." After some years of service as a mail stop for wagon trains crossing the prairies from Missouri to Illinois, Pleasant Hill became Worth when it was platted by John Pyle in 1827. The name "Worth" is derived from a word meaning "to increase." When railroads arrived in the late 1800s and early 1900s, business picked up around the depot; goods moved into town from miles away. In 1905 merchandise such as flour and hardware reached $1 per pound at local stores; worth grew to over $10 per pound by 1910 thanks to products brought in by shipping companies including Lake Shore & Michigan Railway Company's Chicago branch line that ran through town.
