Worth is home to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the Illinois State Fairgrounds. The first settler in what is now Worth was James Hargrave who arrived onSR 200 in 1827. In 1835, John Millington founded a sawmill and gristmill near the present day intersection of SR 213 and SR 158. By 1837, all of central Illinois had been incorporated into the new state of Illinois, so Worth lost its importance as an economic center but continued to grow with new development such as a cotton gin in 1840 and a foundry in 1851. In 1865, William Thornton donated land to build the current University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign campus; this act helped spur further development within Worth by becoming one of the first universities located in central Illinois. The university has since grown large enough that it now occupies several separate campuses spanning several miles downtown from its original location on one main boulevard (the name change from "University Avenue" to "UIUC Avenue" reflects this). In addition to UIUC Ave., other major streets which house various parts or wings of UIUC include Westheimer Road/Downtown Drive (west side), South Shore Drive (east side), North Shore Drive (north side), East Campus/Old Main Building Grounds (south side), West Campus/New Main Building Grounds (west side) and Kesselman Way/East Campus/Old Main Building Grounds (east side). As well as many smaller buildings across campus including residence halls and student union buildings housing more than 10,000 students total. This growth has led to some problems – most notably increasing traffic congestion on UIUC Ave., which has caused concerns about how much more space UIUC will need Eventually even adding more lanes onto I-94 could not solve though possible solutions like bike paths have been proposed . Additionally there are also plans for larger new buildings being erected on adjacent property which may impact local transportation options outside of UIUC if approved by city planners

In 1922, Worth became one of the original towns in Kane County. The community was named for John Worth's father-in-law, who had served as a U.S. Representative from Illinois from 1853 to 1861 and as Mayor of Chicago from 1860 to 1861. The first post office in Worth was established in 1870, and the first store opened its doors on December 7, 1872. By 1889, there were six businesses open in the village; three stores (the Post Office & Exchange building, the keg store and Wagon Wheel), two blacksmiths (John Fenton and Alfred Jones) and a hotel (the White House). A millinery shop opened later that year; this would become known as "The Empress". In 1902–03, work began on what is now called "The Mill", which would be the largest concrete structure built in Kane County until World War II. The Mill would remain operational into the 21st century; it has been used for storage, retail space and more recently housing units. "The Mill" also played an important role during World War I when local mills produced lumber for use by military forces across America; over 2 million barrels of Timber Rendezvous lumber were produced from 1945 to 1945 alone thanks to "The Mill". In 1925–26 Mrs Addams donated land adjacent to her home on First Street for a school district which eventually became Aurora Township; Aurora School District No./Worth High School opened its doors that fall with Miss Emma Griggs serving as teacher/director of instruction until her retirement in 1978. Mrs Addams' donation led to future expansions including: another school district formed by merger with Hinsdale Township (1988); another gift - this time land near present day Clintonville - giving rise to Stillwater Township (2002); finally - an addition toworth Main Street – becoming known as The Addams Place - opening its doors on October 17th 2006 after years of planning and fundraising led by then Village President Rick Prendergast ().
