Worth is a city in Addison County, Illinois, United States. The population was 10,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Addison County. The name of Worth was given to the town by General James Robertson during the Mexican–American War as part of his strategy to consolidate land grants around Chicago. The first permanent settler in what is now Worth was Nicholas Pappe in 1838. A post office called Worth was established in 1848, and continued in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The first store on Main Street opened on July 1, 1851. In 1857, Worth incorporated as a village, and remained an unincorporated community until 1959. In 1865, General John Jarratt founded Camp Silliman which became one of the largest military encampments east of the Mississippi River. Camp Silliman would provide food for troops fighting in the American Civil War and later become a training ground for police officers called "the cowboy brigade." Many famous law enforcement figures were trained here including: Saul Bellow and Harry Blackstone (founder of legal advice company Blackstone). In 1897, Congress passed an act granting city status to Worth and all other towns within its jurisdiction made under that Act; this gave city officials more power over local affairs than had been granted to them hitherto. In 1914-1915 WWI resulted in several hundred casualties among soldiers from Worth who were garrisoned at Camp Kilpatrick near Fort Wayne Indiana; many residents donated land for hospitals and clinics set up specifically for troops wounded or killed during World War I In 1925-1926Improvement began on Main Street between First Avenue south and Second Avenue west with new sidewalks and lighting fixtures On July 1st 1928 burglar alarm system installed By 1930 average household income reached $18 per week

George Washington Carver's home and land were also part of the city limits when it was founded. Worth has a rich history that goes back to its founding days as a small community in McLean County. In 1837, John Worthy and his wife Catharine De Witt Worth founded Worth in honor of their father-in-law George Washington Carver who had helped them purchase some land near Carbondale from Governor James Kinship II., giving them their start as a new community. At first the town functioned only as a stop on Mrs.Worth's wagon trip to her job as schoolteacher at Carbondale; but due to its close proximity to Carbondale and other towns in McLean County, worth quickly became known for its fine cuisine - including local peach pie - and well-manicured gardens around what is now Main Street (then called Woodward Avenue). In 1840, after many years of growth and development within the walls of our old one room schoolhouse - complete with coal furnace & kiln used during those early days ---worth finally boasted its own post office under the name "Worth". After years of hard work by citizens thru committees and fundraising efforts led by Mrs.Worthy herself ---the new post office opened on March 6th 1840 atop what are now First Avenue & Main Street! With over 100 residents mailing pieces each day to P O Box 5496 ---worth soon began serving as one of central Illinois' largest communities! Over time various businesses have been established within our ever growing confines: grocery stores (Ender’s Grocery), hair salons (The Hairdresser’s Shop), dry goods stores (Flowers/Garden Supply), convenience stores (Cafeteria/Laundry) - all while keeping our downtown core always alive with live music acts nightly throughout the year! Today we continue this proud tradition by hosting annual chili cookoffs featuring top chili restaurants from throughout central Illinois each fall...and we can't wait for you all to come join us LIVEFORCEFANZONE this weekend too!
