Worth is a small city in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 6,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. Worth was founded on February 17, 1864 by Jesse Worth and his brother-in-law W. P. Bemis as a town in Macomb Township. In 1945, the federal government purchased for $1 million what had been an abandoned farmstead near Worth and built the United States Army's Third Infantry Division's Headquarters and Service Command Center there as part of Project Coronet. In 1947–48, additional land was bought from the railroad company to form a town square that features an observation tower over Route 66 which can be seen from both sides of I-74 east of downtown Springfield. On September 30, 1949, General Electric Company completed its purchase of Westinghouse Corporation's electric power business in Worth for $13 million making it one of the largest corporate acquisitions in history at that time. In 1957–58, First National Bank completed construction on what would become known as "The Plaza" which included office space and residential units above a four-level shopping mall with parking garages below ground level serving many nearby businesses including Sears & Roebuck and Kresge's department stores on higher levels across from Interstate 74/Ustra Street. In 1970–71 Westinghouse sold its electric power business to American Electric Power for $5 billion making it one of America's largest industrial companies at that time; this made him owner of more than 50% of all U.S.'s generating capacity after purchasing Con Edison Company (the largest municipally owned utility) in 1968). Worth is located on the east side of the I-71/I-80 beltway and is bordered by Des Plaines to the north, Urbana to the east, andNormal to the south. In 1870, Daniel Davenport arrived from New York City with his family and started trading goods with local Indians including some of their chiefs. By 1872, Davenport had founded one of northern Illinois' first grain mills near where he now lives on State Route 14 known as Davenport's Mill #1). By 1889, there were six stores and three hotels in Worth with a population of 2,-000 people; however this number decreased over time due to competition from other towns withinChampaign County (eastern Urbana being especially successful at drawing business away from Worth). Worth experienced its most significant development during World War II when hundreds of German POWs were forced intoWWII work camps within its boundaries including Camp Evans located just east of town along IL- 71A close to Interstate 80 (). Most male POWs were worked at camp industries such as munitions production or agriculture while many women also worked there although few are known about because they remain unaccounted for today (some women have been living outside Champaign County since 1945). postwar growth continued throughthe 1960s as residents moved away for jobs or Trace Tech High School opened nearby providing educational opportunities for locals children while also accommodating more than 3500 students during school years across all grades; though enrollment has slowly declined since then primarily due to costcutting measures by CDFA schools district (in particular Crestview Elementary) throughoutChampaign County’s public education system).
