Worth, Illinois is a city in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-Springfield Heights-Algonquin Combined Statistical Area. The community of Worth was organized on December 28, 1881 by J. W. Worth and his wife Nancy (née French). The name was chosen to reflect the fact that it stood on a rich agricultural soil which had been valuable for grain production since before European settlement in this area. In 1894, a post office was established at Worth; the first postmaster being George Fenton. By 1907 there were 8 stores in town and 15 residents; all but one of these being farmers who raised corn, wheat or other items for local markets. In 1911 Worth had 10 hotels and 11 restaurants; two churches—the First Presbyterian Church and Stroud Methodist Episcopal Church—and six grocery stores as well as three railroad tracks running through town center making it one of the most commerical places in McLean County during that time period! In 1930 an electric power plant with five turbines came online and changed the complexion of life in town overnight: electricity became essential to lighting up downtown streetside businesses while still allowing citizens to produce their own food from scratch instead of dependence on commercial suppliers! Today’s cultural legacy includes several art galleries (including one founded specifically for visual arts), a number of professional music venues (including two largest indoor amphitheaters), live theatrical productions year-round, dozens of small businesses supporting local agriculture and services such as engineering work outposts or waste management services at various locations around town (a few also offer unique products & services such as home health aides & pet groomers) – leaving aside just about everything else that might make up “life” outside those walls! Gun slings have a long and varied history, dating back to ancient Greece. Gun slings were used as projectiles by the Greeks, Romans, Chinese and many other cultures. In the United States, they were first introduced into use in the late 1700s. The early firearms of the American Revolution did not include enough weight to effectively launch a projectile over a long distance. One solution was to use gun shot balls made from lead or other heavy materials that could be hurled as projectiles over a short distance by slingshot or bowmen. These projectiles often missed their target completely but brought down scores of British soldiers with them. In 1792, Captain John Byers of Lake George's Light Infantry presented to Congress an improved system for launching artillery pieces using gun shot balls instead of arrows. This system was called "Sling-Shott." The sling shot ball was designed to be fired over a wide area by shooting it multiple times through two barrels at high speed, then releasing it so that it flew straight up into the air and impacted its target some distance away from the shooter. The advantage of this system was that it allowed large numbers of shots to be fired rapidly at targets near and far away without waste or inaccuracy. The development of shotguns in the late 1800s made riverboat travel much more dangerous and necessitated the addition of gun slings on board vessels for protection against small arms fire from shore batteries ashore. Slings also became standard on sailing ships when larger guns became available and carried along with them significant firepower should they ever need to fight off an attack from land (a practice known as “ scaling”). Gun slings continued in use throughout World War II, most notably during Operation Overlord when millions of rounds were fired at Nazi forces using both rifle grenades and machineguns employing gun-slung slings across Normandy beachhead singlehandedly by General Dwight D Eisenhower’s Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force commanders Colonel Neil Ritchie (commanding IX Corps), Major General Geoffrey Keyes (commanding V Corps) and Lieutenant General Sir Bernard Montgomery (commanding XXX Corps).
