Worth is an unincorporated community in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 579 at the 2010 census. Worth is located near Carbondale and Edwardsville. The first white settlers arrived in what is now Worth in 1837 when James Fenton and his family moved from Baltimore, Maryland to a tract of land along the White River that he had bought from the Native Americans. The settlement lasted only a few years before being abandoned because of Indians hostilities. A new settlement was established about two miles away on the same site in 1839 by David Potter and his brother Isaac. At this location, they built a cabin which served as their home until 1840 when they moved to Carbondale where they owned a farm for several years. In 1845, they sold their property to John McNaught who became the first postmaster at Worth. In 1849, James Fenton's son-in-law George Hodge purchased some of McNaught's land and founded the town of Carbondale on it; this town continued to exist until it merged with Carbondale into that city in 1907. The original town boundaries were: east side of White River (now Kane County), south side of White River (now Edwardsville), west side of Chicago Avenue (now I-57), north side of Chicago Avenue (now K-1 road). From its establishment until 1907, carbondale contained no black residents; all people living there were white occupants or descendants of white occupants who had come overland during the American Civil War or earlier waves of immigration from Europe. When Worth Township was created within Kane County in 1908 out of parts of Carbondale and Edwardsville communities, it included part or all of carbondale; however, due to lack thereof governance by either township organization or local citizens/government officials during its early years, little development occurred within its borders other than modest infrastructure building projects such as roads and bridges dating back to those early days including: a water tower built 1911; an electric light plant erected 1916; a telephone line installed 1929; and various small stores built between then and World War II including one operated by J P McAfee which still stands today as part Of course much has changed since then both locally within Kane County as well as nationally with technology advances making many things available we never even contemplated 25 years ago!

He bought land east of present-day Worth and built a cabin which he named "Worth". In 1847, Worth family member Elijah Worth donated 100 acres (40 hectares) to the town for use as a public square. In 1859, Worth had its first schoolhouse and in 1865 it became the first community to have a water system. In 1916, Forbes Elementary School was opened and soon after that the towns library began serving residents of Worth as well. Worth has experienced many growth opportunities over the years; such as when it annexed neighboring Hinsdale in 1959 and then again in 1988 when it purchased land from McLean Township for $3 million dollars; thus forming one large township with three smaller townships within it. Additionally, during 2006-2007 renovations to nearby Millennium Park caused most of downtown worth to be closed off because of traffic congestion; however due to donations by local businesses and citizens alike THANK YOU for your patience! Worth is a town in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 989 at the 2010 census. Worth was founded in 1854 by John C. Worth and his son-in-law, J. H. Milburn, as a small farm community on the east side of the Mississippi River near what is now Stemmons County.[4] In 1870, Worth became an incorporated village with a population of 557; it merged with neighboring Bedford in 1902 to form Worth Village (now called North Bedford). The original town site includes part of present-day Glen Ellyn and parts of Park Ridge and Wheaton.
