The area that would become Woodstock was first settled by Europeans in the early 1800s. The first post office in Woodstock was established in 1827. In 1881, the town became a part of Chicago and had no resident school system until 1906 when it joined the Central School District. The history of Woodstock can be traced back to 1817 when many families from Indiana came to America and started a farming community known as "Nolan's Grove." They built cabins on hills overlooking their property and named it after John Nolan who had arrived with his family from Scotland in 1799-1800. Many of these pioneers are buried at nearby Carbondale National Cemetery. In 1828, General William Hull founded Hull's Settlement which included what would become Howard Woodsboro and parts of Carbondale Township (now north suburban Cook County). In 1831, General Hull sold all his land to John Fenton who organized the village of Fentonville. On February 14th, 1835, Fentonville incorporated as an independent village under the name "Fenton." On May 19th of that year, following annexation by Chicago due to political pressure from Mayor George Washington Carver Jr., Fentonville renamed itself "Chicago" despite initial protests from its residents who wanted to keep their name unchanged. In 1886, during city growth and annexations throughout Cook County (and later Lake Michigan), the existing villages within Carbondale Township were combined into one new municipality called "Woodstock." The people of Woodstock are engaged in many different businesses including agriculture; manufacturing; service industries such as transportation; trade unions; schools; churches; etc. They have also been active politically for over 100 years through local government encompassing both Democratic Party organizations and Republican Party organizations in addition to voting for members of both houses of Congress as well as holding several referendums on various issues including prohibition and gambling reform which led directly to Prohibition being passed state-by-state across America via national referendum two decades later. Overall there has been significant economic development over the years with jobs moving into areas such as technology (including IT companies), health care services (including nursing homes/medical clinics), retail sales/businesses serving light industrial users (manufacturing plants closed down or converted into warehouses) as well as larger professional employers such as Johnson & Johnson and Monsanto Company among others while smaller farmers have experienced continued success thanks to advances in technology allowing them to reduce inputs costs while still producing high quality crops
