Woodstock, Illinois was a small town located in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The town was founded in 1851 by the merger of two other small towns, Beloit and Woodstock. The population of Woodstock was 1,700 at the time it incorporated as a village in 1877. In 1915, the Village of Woodstock merged with neighboring Belleville to form a new municipality known as Belleville-Niles Township. As of the 2010 census, Belleville-Niles Township had a population of 24,811. The first permanent settlers in what is now Belleville-Niles Township were Methodist Episcopalians from Surry County who arrived in 1849. They built a log cabin on an east side of the Chicago River and named their settlement after Hennepin County's capital city - Bloomington - but they abandoned it within two years because there was no water available for irrigation purposes and low levels ofSoil fertility made farming difficult. In 1852 Marius Bogan bought property along what is now I-294 north of Belleville and started growing corn, wheat and beans for export to Chicago; however he only managed to survive for three years before his farm failed due tofffff too much rain fpr his crops and high winds that caused bluffs along the river to collapse which hindered navigation. In 1865 John Addison bought land between I-294 and I-65 south of Belleville from Bogan; this gave him control over both sides of what is now I-94 corridor which connected Chicago with points north. Addison decided to name his new community after General John Custer's battle site - Little Big Horn - so residents began calling their township "Custerville" during its early days (the spelling has been retained ever since). A post office called "Belleville" was established at the junction of Wabash Avenue & Illinois Route 90 in 1908; it closed operations on December 15th 1925 due to lack of mail volume. In the early 1800s, Woodstock was a small village in Randolph County, Illinois. It was founded by Methodist Episcopalians and named after the town of West Stockton, California. The first settler in what is now Woodstock was Jameson Ketchum, who arrived in 1792. By 1802, there were only 20 residents living in what is now Woodstock. The Village of West Stockton was founded nearby by Methodists on the same land in 1856. In 1860, the two villages merged to form the Town of Woodstock. The town had a population of 120 people and it prospered until 1898 when it failed to comply with state laws mandating segregation for black citizens. Aftermath: The failure of the town caused several hundred families to move out of Randolph County and into nearby Decatur County where they formed new towns such as Pekin and Urbana. Only a few hundred people remained in Woodstock by 1901 when it became an unincorporated community known as "Woodstocksville."
