On April 14, 1861, after more than two years of planning, the Union army invaded Illinois and captured Springfield. The town's mayor, John A. Palmer, organized a militia to resist the invaders and succeeded in delaying them until help could arrive. This victory was followed by other towns in Illinois as the Union forces advanced into what is now Missouri. In 1920-1921 an experimental hydroelectric power plant was constructed at White Rock Lake near present-day Carbondale; this created jobs for many locals during World War I as workers installed turbines onsite Woodstock experienced another growth spurt during World War II with an increase in manufacturing jobs due to wartime production shortages After World War II ended there were decreases in job opportunities throughout much of America due to technological advancements
