In the early 1800s, Woodstock was a small hamlet in the county of Kane. The town was founded by Simon Cameron in 1818 and became an important center for agricultural production and trade. In the late 1800s, Woodstock experienced a surge in population growth as people moved to the area to escape the city pollution and rural life. By 1910, Woodstock had reached its peak population with over 7,000 residents. However, during World War II, most of the town's residents fled to Canada or other jurisdictions due to military hostilitiesanging throughout Illinois. As a result of these factors, enrollment at nearby Decatur Community College plummeted from its high levels in the 1920s to just 50 students in 1950; leading to decimation of local businesses and industry. Despite this decline, certain aspects of Woodstock's history remain significant today: its vibrant architecture; its rich cultural heritage; and its active community spirit. For example, many of the town's historic buildings are still used as living spaces or offices today; and several streets boast namesakes such as "Cameron Street" and "John Fenton Street." Additionally, local businesses continue to thrive despite changes in economic conditions which have impacted many communities within greater Chicago metropolitan area. One important development that occurred during this decade was advances being made towards television: by 1938, all major networks had begun broadcasting live programming over television signals instead of transmitting films or programs onto small transmitters located far away like earlier generations had done. This change not only helped improve quality control for televised programming but allowed viewers to see programming from around the world which would previously have been difficult or impossible to experience firsthand.
