The first gun targets in Woodstock were placed there by the first settlers in 1810. The town was founded on a small farm that was donated by Samuel Gregg. A rifle range and target preserve were built, and pistol ranges were also established. In 1907, the Illinois State Rifle Association (ISRA) was formed in Woodstock and began hosting annual matches here. In 1923, the town became a city, and thegun ranges all passed away until recently when they were resurrected as an indoor shooting range called “The Range Place” with a new building being constructed on the original site. In 1899, Mayor John Dorman erected a monument to fallen soldiers at what is now Park Plaza just south of Main Street. It has been said that this monument is one of the most popular locations for target shooting in town because it is easy to find and offers good shooting opportunities for all skill levels. Rifle shootings are still popular here though handguns have become more common over time as well due to available space or better equipment available at local gun stores. There are currently six pistols ranges open to the public which include three rifle ranges as well as two shotgun ranges that offer Crosman Premier pellets for those who wish to practice with shotguns only or fire different types of rounds offhand without using paper targets!
