Woodstock, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 11,748 at the 2010 census. It is the capital of Cook County and home to the Chicago Park District. Woodstock was founded in 1847 by Methodist missionaries as a mission town in what is now Kane County. The community took its name from nearby Mount Woodstock, which had been an important site for religious services since the late eighteenth century. In 1853, members of the General Assembly of Illinois recommended that the name be changed to Woodstock after then-Senator James K. Polk's visit to that area during his unsuccessful gubernatorial campaign. After Polk's election victory and signing of the state Constitution on November 3, 1853, he proposed changing it back to Mount Woodstocks because "the people hereabouts are not so nearly woodsy as those in Tennessee or Kentucky." In 1865–1866 (during the American Civil War), Woodstock became one of several Union military campgrounds near Springfield while Springfield struggled to maintain its supply lines against Confederate raids and attacks on supplies moving through Indiana and Illinois'. As both communities grew increasingly dependent on each other for food and munitions storage, tensions escalated; by early 1865 some residents had created a pro-Union militia group known as "The Republicans". On April 14th 1865 an attack on Confederate troops at Ridgefield Naval Air Station led to open warfare between Union forces and pro-Confederate militiamen throughout northeastern Missouri; when news arrived of such hostilities in nearby Springfield, many citizens thereupon deserted their homes for fear of brigandage by pro-Union men within their own community. On May 30th 1865 local newspapers published photosjournalist John Deere's dispatch from Stone Bridge over Elk River about skirmishes taking place between Union soldiers under Colonel Edward Jethro Kelley ( later known as General Alfred Terry) against secessionist militias near where he was stationed with orders from General Ulysses S Grant – these were two days after Johnson's raid into northern IL had failed without any significant results: "a very sharpshooter Regiment" reported killed 23 Confederates combined with 4 missing orcaptured prisoners total - this being only one day before General Sherman's march into central IL began...Kelley reports that his Brigade has successfully repulsed most all attacks made by your Col[or]d [Jethro] Kelley’s Battalion." This event also helped lead to increasing public support for Union cause in eastern IL while further south events such as Black Hawk War continued attracting much attention beyond that region due largely to media coverage focused on more pressing issues elsewhere

Woodstock, Illinois was a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States before the turn of the 21st century. It is now part of Peoria Township. The town was founded on July 1, 1871 by James G. Cook as a railroad stop on the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad between Joliet and Rockford. Cook named it after his birthplace, Woodstock in Oxfordshire, England. The first store in Woodstock opened in 1872 and the first school was built in 1875. The post office opened in May 1897 and the first doctor was appointed in 1899. In 1903, the population of Woodstock had grown to over 100 people when it became a city with its own government. On December 3rd of that year however, because of World War I efforts by local businesses to avoid federal registration for war production output ( since many industry members were American companies), Woodstock's status as an incorporated municipality lapsed; it reverted back to being simply a rural community with no municipal services until 1933 when it again became an unincorporated community within McLean County limits under its new charter form from then on until Chatham City annexed it into Peoria Township effective January 1st 1934 which made him Mayor
On July 8, 1969, the Woodstock Festival took place in a small town in Illinois. The festival was organized by promoter Michael Sweet and featured some of the most popular rock bands of the time.
