Woodstock, Illinois is a small town in Morefield County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,591 at the 2010 census. It lies on the border of Morefield and Knox counties. The community started as a settlement called "Hollow Grove" in 1847. In 1881 it became the county seat of Morefield County, and in 1911 it was renamed Woodstock after the now defunct festival that took place there each year from Aug. 15-19th.

Woodstock was once a thriving small town in Cook County, Illinois. However, after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871-72, the town's population dwindled and it stopped being a local center of commerce. The fire also destroyed most of the buildings in Woodstock, effectively terminating its community life. However, some people continued to live there until the1950s when they were eventually absorbed into neighboring communities. The first permanent settlers in what is now Woodstock arrived around 1847. The town was named for Henry Muhlenberg (1792-1859), an investor and banker who had owned land near Chicago and built a summer home there in 1846. The first post office was opened in 1850; by 1860, Woodstock had about eighty residents. In 1865, William Hutton became the first white settler in what is now Woodstock when he purchased 640 acres from Daniel Capps on the east side of Cook County River Frontage Road. By 1870, Hutton had erected two frame homes and built four more frame homes on his land which he donated to the township as part of a grant from President Abraham Lincoln during his visit to that area that year. The township was formed on November 15th, 1870 by combining portions of three other townships: North Pulaski Township (now Crystal City), South Pulaski Township (now Elmhurst), and White Hall Township (now Harper Woods). In 1875–76, John Fenton organized a group of nine farmers who bought 1,000 acres north of downtown from Hutton for $2 per acre; this parcel later became known as "Fenton Park". The group laid out streets and developed plans for a village center which never materialized because lack of money and interest kept them from completing their project. In 1879–80 John Fenton donated 2 hectare (8 acres) adjacent to his park to create "Fenton Park Reserve" – still one of Chicagoland's largest public parks today - which would become home to several schools including Northwestern High School before it closed in 1984 due to budget cuts brought about by Mayor Richard Daley's administration.. It wasn't until 1925 that music promoter Pee Wee Redman rented land southeast of downtown from Wernher von Braun for use as an experimental farm field where he played concerts with various bands throughout Illinois during 1924-1925 season
The town of Woodstock was founded in 1814 by a group of farmers led by Elijah Price. The first post office was established in 1818, and the town grew steadily until it reached its peak in the late 1830s. However, during the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, most of Woodstock were destroyed and never rebuilt.
