But growth stalled around 1860 due to competition from larger towns in central Illinois such as Aurora and Lombard. By 1870, only 515 residents remained in Woodridge; by 1900 only 299 remained. In 1904, when manufacturing began to take off in Illinois due to increased demand for materials related to World War I, many local businesses closed their doors or merged with others within a few years of each other. However, Woodridge persevered and continued to thrive until the late 1920s when it lost most of its industry to outsourced production abroad. In 1812, a group of entrepreneurs led by Colonel John Hull founded the town of Woodridge on the east bank of the Des Plaines River in what is now Woodridge, Illinois. The town was named after Colonel Hull's home state, New York. The first settler in what is now Woodridge was George Merrill, who arrived in 1814. In 1816, the Illinois General Assembly passed an act that created a township and ordered that all male citizens between the ages of 21 and 50 must live within it. By 1830, there were over 100 residents living in Woodridge. In 1833, Congress created a new county called Cook County as part of the Louisiana Purchase and set aside land for Illinoisans to settle. The first settlers in what is now Woodridge were among those who arrived in search of land purchased from the Native Americans. The Townsite Act (1834) authorized construction of a road from Chicago to Rock Island via Homer Glen and Oak Park. Work began on this road in 1835 and it was completed two years later (in 1837). This road became one of the most important transportation corridors in America during its early days. When Apple Inc.'s Steve Jobs founded Apple Computer Inc., he used his own personal car to commute into work from his home near Highland Park until he moved to Cupertino, California in 1976-77; at that time Highway 128 became known as "Apple Boulevard." During World War I, many people from Woodridge enlisted with units stationed throughout Illinois. Machine gunners and infantrymen manned artillery batteries along with other various military duties during World War I including trench warfare on both sides of Lake Michigan; however no Battlefields are located withinWoodridge Township today because these areas have been reclaimed by nature following wars fought elsewhere within Cook County or outside Illinois altogether! In 1920-21 whenWWII broke out Copper Mine owner James Buchanan organized 110 men into 3 companies to prospect for copper ore near present day Crystal City on Mayflower Road south side Of Aurora IL 60522 which they did not find but still continued mining even though their permits expired Dec 22 1921 !! Copper mine still active today
