The Village of Woodridge was platted on November 3, 1871 byJohn D. Rockefeller and his brother Edwin C Roper as a small community on the banks of the South Branch of the Chicago River near what is now Waukegan Heights. It consisted only of two houses - Mr. & Mrs Hargrave's home on Long street and Mr (now Prof) Greenoughs home on Cedar Plain which were used as meeting places for local farmers during early days when transportation between communities was difficult or expensive to obtain The name "Woodridge" originated with JF Worthwood Sr., who purchased land adjacent to where present day Elmhurst stands in 1861 while living in Buffalo Grove IL; he named his new venture "Worthside". Worthside prospered until 1872 when ownership passed through several hands including that of JR Dearborn who sold it to Amos Kendall but it reverted back into Worthside's possession shortly thereafter before finally becoming part Of Woodridge In 1915, when Woodridge had a population of 2,500 people it became oneofChicago's largest villages with its own police department and fire department being jointly operated by both entities until 1961 when separate departments were established In 1958 Mayor John F Worthwood Jr.'s administration merged the Police Department functions with those now housed within Rockford Township (at that time still partOf Cook County) creating what is known today as "Woodridge Township Police Department". In 1974 township officials decided that separate Fire Departments would be necessary so they too amalgamated their respective departments creating now known as "Village Fire Department" .

The community was founded by John Witherspoon in 1857, when he and his family moved from Woodridge, New York. Witherspoon's grocery was the first store in what is now Woodridge.
In 1871, the village of Woodridge was organized. The town of Woodridge was established in 1870. The village and town were merged into the city of Chicago on July 1, 1893.
