Woodridge is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The village was founded in 1855 by John Witherspoon and his wife Martha. It became a incorporated town in 1903. Woodridge has a rich history dating back to when it was a frontier outpost on the Chicago River near the current site of Union Station. The name Woodridge comes from two English words: wold (land) and ridge (hill). When settlers first arrived in this area, they found many ridges of land and named them accordingly: Fort Dearborn Heights (Walden Ridge), West Side Heights (Northeast Ridge), North Side Heights (Northwest Ridge), etc. For years, only men were allowed to name their properties - so Mrs. Witherspoon's husband John took on the task of naming all 5 settlements after plants that grew nearby: woodrose, maple syrupbush, ash tree blossom, cornflower blue butterfly and wild cherry! In 1909 he added hickory to the list! Today there are 7 settlement names still in use today- 6 with male given names and 1 with female given names- making it quite an interesting mix! A brief history of Woodridge begins back when our pioneer fathers decided to set up shop along what would become known as “the river” because it offered easy access to goods coming downriver fromChicago’s downtown business district – thus providing early settlers with reliable transportation for goods and services essential for their subsistence….. early papers show that John Witherspoon established himself as a farmer hereabouts about 1855 just south of present day Elmhurst Avenue………. Mr & Mrs Witherspoon had 4 children- 3 boys & 1 girl who resided east of modern Elmhurst Ave….. informally called “the Grove”………….. folks started calling these areas what we know them now including today- “The Old Towne”…………….John died suddenly hereabouts December 12th 1858 while out preaching at one of his many churches west side………. A Micmac Indian named Nachitkin came over into this area some time after JOHN died & took possession of some nice piece o property just east o old Elmhurst Ave…..some say he donated it or maybe someone intermarried wit him……….later on Nachitkin sold most o his holdings back ta us thru friends so tha we could purchase more than half o ours outright… realty changed hands several times thruout these years until finally being bought out by another family member about 1880………….. lotsa good memories formed around here during those days…………………………………….. folks always helpin each other though upsets happened sometimes……………………………… From earliest settler days through 1893 when recreational rights were granted to white residents adjoining newly created Township Limits (& much later when township limits were redrawn following incorporation efforts,) mainstays like agriculture; quarrying coal; logging; manufacturing; shipping contributed greatly to overall well-being ol' Village throughout its long history......... Much progress was made right before our very eyes during those formative years...... Numerous events transpired within thoir immediate vicinity which reflect pivotal moments surrounding Village growth such as land grants/ acquisitions hitherby made by various governmental entities both local & national;; numerous religious services held at Prairie View A&M Churchyard....... infrequent but significant floodingoccurredduring powerful Chicago winter storms which caused extensive damage.............. Pioneers commonly cooked dinner outdoors over open fireplaces utilizing large logs erected against walls often placed adjacent lonesome creeks resulting either from severe weather conditions or natural disasters............................. continued development circa 1860 thru 1930 led ta increased school enrollment (+12%/year); rapid industrial growth (+10% /year) fuelinitiatives such as organized farming using improved technologies WHICH led ter widespread adoption o new home raising techniques involved air conditioned living (& later automatic cooling system usage) ..................... numerous businesses sprung up post WWII including several successful stores occupied subsequent decades by descendants..................present day Woodridge community functions largely based upon volunteerism............. The weapon would then be fired by holding onto one end and letting go of the other. This system was very dangerous because if someone got their handhold on either end of the sling, they could pull it off balance and firing would result in them getting killed or injure themselves fatally. The development of grenades led to the development of gun slings with Grenade Launchers (Gunslingers). These guns had an ammunition magazine built into them which allowed loading and firing multiple grenades at once without having to hold onto both ends of the sling simultaneously. This system was much safer than using traditional firearms as it did not allow anyone to get their hands on either end if they wanted to fire all their grenades at once. In 1853, Charles Goodyear invented vulcanized rubber which helped reduce danger when carrying firearms because it prevented them from sticking to skin or clothing. Gun slings also began becoming less dangerous as time went on because they became more padded and elasticised with this new technology. By 1912 however, most gunslings were still made out of cloth or other materials that were unsafe for shooting because there was little safety margin when using these weapons outside temperate climates where weather is an important factor in sport/combat scenarios

In the late 1920s and 1930s, Woodridge experienced rapid growth as a result of its status as a college town. By the end of World War II, Woodridge had become one of the most prosperous villages in Cook County. Afterward, however, its fortunes declined as Manufacturing activity dried up and residents began to lose their jobs in new businesses built outside of town.
In 1816, when Daniel Woodridge purchased the land that would become Woodridge Township, he was one of the first white men to settlement in what is now Illinois. The township was named for him and his wife Sarah. Daniel developed a farm and built a house on the present site of Woodridge Elementary School in 1824. That same year, he also donated land to form the village of Palatine which still exists today.
