Woodridge is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The village is named after General James Wilkinson Woodridge who fought in the American Revolution and became a general in the U.S. Army under George Washington. The first settler in what is now Woodridge was Abram Ketchum who built a cabin on what is now Main Street in 1792. In 1824, Amos Ketchum donated land to the Village for $1 per acre (later raised to $5). The Village of Woodridge was incorporated on December 2, 1847 by an act of the State of Illinois. In 1872, two brothers-in-law, Wm Hallett and John Barnett built a mill on White Road south of town which soon became one of the largest mills in Illinois due to its quality products and its ability to produce flourexport quantities at low prices to Europe and other parts of America; it continued operations until 1917 when it went out of business because prohibition made goods exported from America illegal without license from the U.S government In 1862 Colonel Samuel Morse donated land east of town for Griggs School which opened in 1865 Because there were no road connections between towns so transportation was by wagon or horseback during that time there were very few people living within walking distance so schools had to rely on subscriptions from farmers or residents who would bring their children to school with them . There were also stores open only during daylight hours so residents could buy items they needed before going off to work . By 1920 most businesses had closed down due primarily to lack of customers or competition from larger cities like Chicago Some buildings that remain today include: Griggs School (opened 1865), Old Post Office (1862), Methodist Episcopal Church (1902), First Baptist Church (1910) and Second Baptist church (1968). In 1924 local resident Harry Wexler started manufacturing "Wexler's Hard Candy" which became very popular in Illinois due its hard candy flavor and consistency unmatched anywhere else In 1955 Heublein Distillery opened up shop next door making ginned olives as well as vodka and various other drinks . After years of decline due mainly to Prohibition efforts by the federal government over 30% OF THE GRIGGS SCHOOL BUSINESS WAS LOST IN THE 1990'S A SUSPENSE THAT PROHIBITION WAS TOO restrictive caused many small businesses such as this one to go outof business too but overall things have been improving with more people living close by for shopping opportunities etc
The town of Woodridge was founded in 1847 by Uriah and Mary Morse. The town became a part of the city of Chicago in 1868.
