Woodridge is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 15,871 at the 2010 census. Woodridge is located on the east side of Chicago and is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settler in what would become Woodridge was Dr. John Crawford in 1837. Crawford's farm lay along present day Skokie Road and he named his property for his friend, General James Kieft. In 1841, the village of Woodridge was organized and laid out by commissioners from Ridgefield Township on land that had been donated by Amos Kendall (1784-1860). The original plat of Woodridge listed 9 families as residents with a total land value of $5,000; it later increased to 11 families with a total land value of $10,000. In 1868, when Schiller Park was created within Cook County by order of then-Governor Daniel Hinsdale (1811-1893), all towns within Cook County were given an equal share in its creation including future Woodbridge Township which became one of Schiller Park's charter townships on November 1st that year. On February 14th 1870 during a meeting convened to consider annexing Elmhurst Village into Schiller Park due to its large housing stock and high level of education available there (the first public school in Elmhurst opened in 1852), Commissioners George Prentice and Myron Cope recommended annexation into Schiller Park but were overruled by Hinsdale who instead urged the village to merge with Elmhurst Village since they both had schools. At this point Villa Grove also merger and became one small community with only 7 homes; however Elmhurst Village retained its own charter as an incorporated town separate from Schiller Park until 1971 when it merged back into Schiller Park becoming one municipality once again though still retaining its own charter status On January 1st 1915 when World War I began hostilities resumed across Europe America erupted with enterprising young men enlisting in armies being called " vocational training camps." With so many people wanting to go off to fight overseas there wasn't enough jobs available at home so soon after the war ended most soldiers returned home having already served their time or being drafted into other countries where they wouldn't see combat In 1921 Rockford Shipyards released their plans for ship construction yards on Lake Michigan adjacent to what would become Forest Hills which would include 3 shipyards producing over 100 vessels each using wood from local mills which could be repaired or replaced On October 20th 1923 destroyed section 8057/815 South between 95th Street & Clybourn Avenue was razed following fire started by Kenneth Breslin who swore he did not know how it got started At 2:00am on Wednesday October 12th 2006 a car careened off exit 33A southbound on I-95 near State Line Drive causing several vehicular accidents resulting in 5 injuries including 2 serious medical conditions none life threatening Following this tragedy numerous safety measures were put into place such as prohibit fast food restaurants operated outside while driving through I-95; closed cell phone service inside restaurants while inside; expanded enforcement against DUI checkpoints throughout Cook County . Nearby businesses closed up shop because no business could afford insurance fees levied for replacement parts for vehicles involved in accidents caused by drivers under the influence
