Woodridge was a small town in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. It was founded in 1848 by the merger of two settlements, North Woodridge (now part of Chicago) and South Woodridge. The population was 1,500 at its peak in 1920. The first settlers were farmers who arrived from Massachusetts. By 1850, they had built a log cabin on the bluff above the village. In 1851, John Hennepin purchased land adjacent to the original settlement and built a larger cabin and began to ferry passengers and goods between his properties and North Woodridge. In 1865, he sold his holdings to George Daley for $5,000. Daley began developing Woodridge into a small city with several stores and homes. He also built the first schoolhouse in town in 1868. In 1880-81, Harry Sanger established an ice cream parlor on State Street east of the village center; this became one of Illinois' most popular tourist attractions during that time period. A fire destroyed much of downtown Woodbridge on December 9th 1889; however, Sanger rebuilt it within weeks using local materials and reopened on January 3rd 1890 with new furniture and fixtures including an opera house gift from Italy's King Umberto I (at that time it was only the second such facility in America). It continued to be one of town's main tourist attractions until 1974 when a tornado destroyed much of downtown while people were shopping at nearby Sears store; as a result most businesses closed soon after which reconstruction efforts started which included adding more public spaces (rebuilding Main Street added sidewalks around all six blocks leading up to it as well as creating new streetscape features like pylons/piers along routes served by smaller streets). The rebuild took over 10 years so today there is much evidence remaining from both eras including reconstructed buildings back onto their original foundation
