Woodridge was a small town in central Illinois that served as the seat of Kane County from 1827 to 1868. It was then renamed Vandalia, and later in 1906 it became Woodridge again. The town is located on the banks of the Kankakee River, about 20 miles northwest of Chicago. The first settler in what would become Woodridge was Nicholas Weiller, who arrived in 1827. Weiller named his farm after his father-in-law, Johann Gottlieb Kessler (1792-1857). In 1830, Weiller married Maria Lapp (1801-1863), daughter of Jonas Lapp and Catharine Muller. They had two children: Augustus Wilhelm Weiler (1831-1903) and Anna Catharine Weiler (1835-1925). In 1838, Jeremiah Coleman erected a log cabin on what is now the corner of Elm and Walnut Streets. Coleman did this to provide wood for his sawmill on the riverbank west of town. He also built a gristmill which operated until 1862. In 1840, George Washington Hobbs established a store at the junction of Elm and Walnut Streets. This store was one of the early businesses in town and remain so today. In 1845, Colonel John Pemberton organized an agricultural society in Woodridge with nine members—seven men and two women—to improve methods for growing corn, beans, peas, potatoes etc., within limits prescribed by government regulations at that time. In 1865–66 there was heavy fighting between Union forces under General Ulysses S Grant and Confederate troops under General Robert Ewell at Wilson's Ford near present day Woodridge village; although General Grant ultimately emerged victorious most residents fled or were driven away during this conflict leaving their homes behind; many Cincinnatians moved into nearby towns such as Peoria or Rockford during this time period following heavy military action taking place around Chicago area especially north/central Illinois region On November 12th 1870 Missouri Compromise decided that only black people could be citizens of Illinois so when Abraham Lincoln took office on March 4th 1861 he ordered all counties in Illinois to reincorporate their white inhabitants into new state called “Illinois” rather than retain all their former county boundaries including those within Kane County which still included parts of Woodridge Consequently all but four out of Kane County’s fifty nine voting precincts were lost forever when they were annexed by newly created Cook County on April 6th 1901 thus ending any vestige remaining from our once large rural community – we are now just a few scattered homes surrounded by high school buildings & farms
The town of Woodridge was founded in 1847 by John and Mary Woodridge. The first settlers were four brothers, Abram, George, Elias and Jacob. The early days were difficult because the land was very dry and there were no trees to provide shade or logs to build homes. But with hard work and a little luck, the community grew quickly. In 1854, the town seat was moved from Liverpool to Woodridge due to population growth. In 1865, the first school building was built on what is now Main Street in Woodridge. That year also saw the arrival of a post office which served the community for over fifty years until it closed in 1978. In 1915, a new garage/bus garagewas built on west side of Main Street which became an important part of town life for many years. In 1969, when Illinois Governor Richard Manges signed into law a bill that made statehood available to all Ulysses S Grant County residents who had lived within its borders since 1800 (the area now comprising much of northwestern Cook County), most people in Woodridge voted not to join this newly created state; however, most people living near where Illinois State Route 63 intersects with US Highway 6 feel that joining would have been an essential part of their history and identity as residents of this small town located just south of Chicago’s Loop
