Woodridge is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 6,756 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Woodridge was founded in 1871 by David and Sarah Carbondale. The Carbondales had emigrated from Ireland in 1845. The first settler in what is now Woodridge was David Carbondale who arrived in 1871. He and his wife, Sarah, started a small farm with six cows and one horse. They raised their children here until they too moved away when their son David Jr., age 10 years old, became a doctor and began practice in Buffalo Grove. The original post office called carbondale (now Woodridge) "Killeen." When it opened on July 15, 1870, it had only 7 residents; all were farmers living near Killeen on the east side of the Chicago River opposite State Street. In 1872 the Post Office changed its name to Carbondale to honor both David Carbondale and his father-in-law John Kilburne who had also arrived in that year from Ireland via Buffalo Grove. In 1881 an addition to the Carbondales' farm was purchased by Hiram Jordon who turned it into an orchard; he named it after his maternal grandfather Benjamin Jordan who had come over as part of the original Immigration Act of 1785 which brought about mass immigration to North America's Great Lakes region during the 1800s boom period when technology allowed for increased production across borders long before international treaties prohibited such activity! From 1886 through 1906 there were 11 postmasters serving Woodridge with 3 gentlemen (Hiram Jordons sons), 5 women (all ladies except 1) and 2 children: Ellen (1886), Franklin (1889), Edith(1892). During this time period there were also 9 homes built here including 4 frame ones dating back to around 1870-75: James Wetherbee's home #2 which still stands today as does Amanda House #1 next door; Hiram Jordan's house #4 on US Highway 44 just south of present day I-630 & Elmhurst Rd.; Mrs Mabel Chisolm's home on Veterans Blvd.; Captain Fenton Hull's house behind Old Orchard Shopping Center east of I-680; Mrs Lillian Hruby's two frame homes - one on Elmhurst Rd./Old Orchard Shopping Center lot & one onVeterans Blvd./I-630 lots - she sold them all prior to her death in 1957! David Barclay bought another piece of land adjoining their early acreage for $675 Apr 1893 . This led to Barclay becoming owner/operator of what would become known as "The Big Barn" granting him exclusive rights to sell hay/grocery items directly out front while selling other goods within limits set by store management! This arrangement continued until 1955 when Store Manager Harry Price decided not to renew Barclays lease due to changing times & industry changes! Some evidence suggests that at some point prior to 1895 Haymarket Grocery may have been located upstairs inside current day First National Bank building... One historian has even suggested that this older structure may have been used as a summer kitchen by Big Barn employees during prohibition years ! Finally we come upon yet another interesting possibility...that this larger garage complex which sat adjacent 500 Sears Dr E between 1958-'60 might once have housed Blackhawk helicopter hangar during later days !!
