Woodridge is an unincorporated community in Cook County, Illinois, United States. It is located near the intersection of Route 1 and Route 9. The community's ZIP code is 62701. The population was 1,947 at the 2000 census. The first permanent settler in what would become Woodridge was Nicholas Dunphy in 1836. He and his family built a cabin on a hill south of present-day town and named their settlement after the wooded area to the east where they had seen white hogs rooting around in search of acorns. The community grew quickly because it supported three farms: one operated by John Ladd, another by Peter White, and still another by Jens Rasmussen (the father of Danish immigrants Lars Rasmussen and Erik Rasmussen). In 1851, Wirt Hansen arrived from Sweden with his family, bringing with him a crop of corn which he planted on his farmstead. This early seedstock for later wheat production helped make up for some lack elsewhere in the area when fertile farmlands became available later on. In 1865, Abram Smith moved from Kentucky to own land along Route 1 east of Woodridge and begin developing it into a farming village that would grow into what is today known as Woodridge Township. Woodridge is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, located on the north side of the city of Chicago. The population was 7,534 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first white settlers in what would become Woodridge arrived in 1837 and built a log cabin on the banks of the Calumet River. They named their settlement after Grove City, Pennsylvania, which they had seen on a wagon ride through Illinois. A post office was established at Woodridge in 1841, and by 1860 it had grown to include a sawmill and gristmill along with approximately 100 residents. The first school in what would become Woodridge was opened in 1857. In 1862, when Illinois became an Confederate state during the American Civil War, many residents moved to Uniontown (now Steger) in neighboring Kane County because that was where most of their family connections were located. By 1865 there were only about 30 residents living at Woodridge but it rapidly grew into an important community with its own store, bank and church. In 1870–71 Woodridge developed into one of the largest cotton mills west of Pittsburgh due to its location near then-ranching country long drained by rapids from the river's cutbank below. Incorporation as a village occurred that year; woodridgers carried out all aspects of village government including electing officers and setting up schools and businesses within their narrow boundaries Cotton production declined throughout much of this period as machines began taking over some jobs while others were shifted to other areas such as textiles or shoe manufacturing; however millhands did not let go easily despite competition from new competitors In 1971–72 Redevelopment Authority developers purchased several parcels adjacent to Mill Creek for $1 million making possible addition of more than 500 housing units which has resulted in today's vibrant commercial district including several high-end restaurants as well as numerous small businesses .
