The Wood River is a long, narrow stream located in Kane County, Illinois. The name comes from the Ojibwa word "woot" meaning "to run." The river flowed through the forested region that today is part of Chicago until it was diverted into the Des Plaines River by developers in the early 20th century. After being redirected again, theriver finally reached its present course within city limits in 1930. The first Europeans to visit this area were French traders and missionaries working in what is now Wisconsin during the 17th century. Jesuit Father Jacques Marquette visited this area in 1673 and named it after Saint Louis, who he said had given him information about this route to reach Winnetka Lake. In 1812, General James K. Polk sent an expedition upriver to survey properties for a new road connecting Chicago with Rock Island via Winnetka Lake. Lieutenant Colonel John J. Pershing's United States Army Expedition under Major general George Armstrong Custer traversed the lower reaches of the river on July 26-Aug 1, 1876 during their attempt to capture Sitting Bull at Wounded Knee Creek near what is now North Lawndale and Evanston suburbs of Chicago. This event helped spur development along the river corridor and led to increased traffic on both roads as settlers moved into adjacent areas east of Chicago and west of Decatur Heights Road (now Racine Avenue). In 1881, when Illinois became a state, two representatives from Kane County were appointed to attend a meeting held at Peoria's Democratic National Convention where they recommended that Illinois be admitted as a state with its own independent government separate from that of Michigan Territory which included Milwaukee County. On November 3, 1881, at a special session of the legislature called by Governor Richard Mott (D), California - then part of Mexico - gained admission as an additional US state adding 1 million people to Illinois' population totaling 10 million by 1890 due primarily to investments made by industrialists interested in exploiting natural resources such as coal and iron ore located along southern Indiana's border with Michigan Territory also becoming states due to ratification of Mexican Constitution including Article VII Section 2 authorizing Texas annexation which took place on February 14 following formal presentation by Governor Edmund E Jones (R) . In 1892 – prior to opening his Progressives' campaign for president – Franklin D Roosevelt delivered one of his best known speeches when he referred favorably to what he called "the great American experiment" noting: On May 5th 1893 – just over one hundred years ago - afterserving 45 years on Congress representing Cook County IL; Abraham Lincoln announced his candidacy for President on April 12th while campaigning against Republican Grover Cleveland who had been elected four months earlier defeating Daniel Webster only days before Lincoln's announcement….. Today we honor our forefathers each day with events like these honoring America’s history; but more importantly we learn how important it is not just For Us But For All Generations To Come
